With 50+ years of growth, the forests around these lakes look more like Northern Wisconsin than Iowa. The "modern" campground features full electric/water/sewer hookups, level gravel pads, and a heavily forested "wilderness" setting in fairly rugged and pretty terrain. There are boat launches, hiking trails, and nice restaurants in nearby Solon and Iowa City. Office is a mess but the bathrooms were VERY clean. Many of the campsite are occupied by full time residents but it looks like they are trying to slowly upgrade the place. Nice fountain in front and new sites with 50amps in back. Campground is open year round but no water or sewer at the sites in the winter. Do have a nice dump station near the road. I have never stayed at a campground where I felt more welcome & at home. The owners, Mark & Bonnie, are so wonderful & down to earth. They turned what was once a cow pasture on their working farm into a peaceful retreat with distant mountain views. Even though Wal-Mart & busy state routes with all their commercial businesses are less than 2 miles away, you would not know it once you are here. The sites are generous with gravel pads at least 80 ft long with grass space no less than 40 ft clearance to the next site. Big-rigs easily fit here once you get down the 1-lane driveway to the campground (don't worry, the owners have assured us no rigs have ever met each other coming/going). Half the sites are fhu, while the rest are electric only with water adjacent. All have picnic tables, fire rings & free Wi-Fi access. When we arrived, we discovered a complimentary bundle of firewood neatly stacked next to our picnic table. There is a completely separate camping area for tents & vintage bus conversions are available for rent. The restrooms/showerhouse building was immaculate, brightly lit, well-ventillated and cutely decorated. The men's room had adorable blinking light spaceship paddle fans. The shower curtains have pockets to hold your valuables & the showers have hanging caddies for your soaps/shower washes. The campground has no pool/hot tub, but does have a swingset/slide & a small gameroom. There are a couple of stages on the grounds where the owners, both accomplished musicians themselves, host Bluegrass, Folk & Rock & Roll music festivals. An abandoned railroad track is behind the campground that you can walk on & a stream runs behind sites 1-4 where you can fish. A small local airport (small planes, no commercial flights) is also next to the campground, but does not interfere with the peacefulness of the place. This campground is located in the heart of the train excursion area of WV. Cass RR, The Cheat Mountain Salamander, The Durbin Rocket & the Tygart Flyer are all located, if not in Elkins, within an hour or so driving distance. Smokehole & Seneca Caverns, Seneca Rocks, Blackwater Falls & Canaan Valley State Parks as well as the National Radio Astronomy Observatory are area attractions not to be missed. Take the time to visit Graceland Inn/Restaurant at Davis & Elkins College. A spectacular mansion on the college campus that overlooks the town of Elkins. It's truely a little slice of WV heaven here. A perfect place to relax & enjoy nature. It is currently in phase 1 of construction with rv & park model sites available. The grounds are immaculately groomed & landscaped. Sites have large concrete parking pads, fhu's with softly lighted power boxes, fire rings & picnic tables. Sites are available for permanent purchase or for rent on a daily, weekly, monthly or seasonal basis. A few sold sites have already been improved with paver patios & fire pits, upgraded landscaping/lighting, & small storage sheds. Sites located *on lake are for Class A's only. Surprisingly, although most sites had very level pads, several sites had significant slopes where I could see rv's needed blocking to reach level. Not something you would expect for a resort-type community or for the prices you pay to buy or rent here. There is an absolutely fabulous nautical-themed clubhouse with a dining room, kitchen, fitness room, game room, pool table, computer room, restrooms, enormous gathering room filled with comfy furniture, a large screen plasma tv located above a stone fireplace, cable & surround sound & a small library of books for lending. The heated pool/hot tub and showerhouse/laundry is adjacent to the clubhouse. Unfortunatly, we were there in October, long after the pool/hot tub closed. During the summer, the resort has planned activities at the clubhouse. Kayaks & paddle boats are for rent for tooling around the small lake & catch & release fishing is allowed. There's a small beach with a volleyball net on the side. A walking trail goes around the perimeter of the complex. Free Wi-Fi was available with excellent reception as transmitter towers were scattered generously throughout the resort. Although there is a cable for cable tv at each site, it is for those that purchase sites. Over-the-air tv was easy for us to get with our antenna/Wingman & DTV converter. Since the resort is new, satellite tv would be great as the newly planted trees wouldn't interfere with reception. This place has great potential as an rv resort with its close proximity to South Haven, friendly staff & resort ammenities. I would highly recommend it either to purchase or rent a site. It is a split campground with a north section & a south section. The north campground is large with small, closely packed grass/dirt sites better suited for smaller rv's & tents. It has a new playground, a new, large & spotless restroom/bathhouse, camping cabins, beach access & a camp store. The south campground is smaller in number of campsites, but has asphalt paved pads with large grassy sites & plenty of large shade trees, much more friendly for bigger rigs. There are a couple of cabins, smaller play area & the restrooms/bathhouse was older & a bit dark, but still clean. Sites in both campgrounds are electric only with fire rings & picnic tables. There are lots of trails to walk & the roads within the park were good for bike riding. The south campground does not have beach access, but it is not far to walk to get to it. The only drawback to this campground, IMO, is the high price of the sites. Being a non-resident, I had to pay $8 per day per vehicle (MH + toad) access fee on top of the site rental. I understood MI state parks require a vehicle permit fee, but I didn't know it would be applied to BOTH of our vehicles. I figured it'd be just on our toad which we'd be using to go in/out of the campground frequently, not on the MH which was parked there for the entire stay. Rather a shock to the pocketbook when I checked in at the ranger station. This is a pretty area of the state to visit & I would recommend this campground. The sites are fairly spacious side-to-side, with the back-ins being 48ft long & the pull-thrus being 75ft long. Campers have access to the hotel's pool & game room via a door card & you get a $1.50 discount coupon for entrance to the Historic Village area. You can also take advantage of the hotel's continental breakfast for $5 per person (complimentary to hotel guests). Free Wi-Fi is provided, although the signal is low at the campground - probably because the transmitter is at the hotel. The tiled restrooms/showers & separate laundry were clean & bright. There's a catch & release pond, group campfire area, small playground & also cute small-scale steam train (from the Historic Village) that runs behind sites 1-11. You'll hear it's "toot-toot" from about 10AM-4PM daily. The on-site restaurant (The Barn) was good at a decent price. I would also recommend The Home Restaurant (fantastic goulash!), Mom's Diner (50's style interior) or Ickey's (bar/grill) all located in downtown Archbold. This is a delightful campground that's part of an interesting & educational historic site & I would recommend it to anyone travelling to or through the area. There is also a separate Federal park. The campground is right on the beach. Assateague has no hotels, so the only people there are campers and people who drive there for the day. There's only 1 loop, the H loop, that has electric hookups. There are no water or sewer hookups. There is a dumping station. The sites are all paved and vary in length. They're close to level. There are no trees, but you're a very short distance from the beach. The comfort stations could use some updating, but are clean and have hot water. Assateague is famous for the wild ponys, which are actually very tame. They'll walk right through your campsite, not aware that you don't go through someone else's site! Reservations can be made 364 days in advance, and the electric loop books quickly for summer weekends. Quiet hours are from 11PM to 7AM. This is a great park if you like the beach. No crowds. The mountain stream running through the park is kept stocked and we observed just about everyone catching trout in the 8 - 12” size range. They are still charging a fee for WiFi here.
