Description: Moderate temperatures help make Emma Wood State Beach popular for swimming, surfing and fishing. Catches include perch, bass, cabezon and corbina. The Ventura River estuary is at the mouth of the Ventura River at the southeast end of the park. It attracts a variety of wildlife including raccoons, songbirds and great blue herons. Dolphins are occasionally seen just offshore. The park also features the crumbling ruins of a World War II coastal artillery site. The offshore Channel Islands can be seen from the beach.

Emma Wood State Beach offers family camping for self-contained vehicles only and group camping is available at Ventura River Group Camp.

Emma Wood State Beach offers primitive camping for fully self-contained vehicles ONLY. Tents are not permitted. No water, restrooms, electricity, fire rings, or phones or dump station are available. There are 90 campsites, which are not level and may contain a mixture of asphalt, dirt, cobble and ocean debris. Maximum vehicle length is 40 feet, due to small turnaround areas.

Camping at Emma Wood State Beach is reservation only from mid-May through Labor Day. There is a one night only enroute camping at Ventura River Group Camp 2 miles South on Main Street in Ventura. During the off season, camping is on a first come first serve basis. High tides may close the campground at any time. Railroad tracks and Highway 101 are adjacent to the campground which can be noisy. Leashed dogs are permitted in the campground only, and are prohibited on the beach.

Group camping is available at Ventura River Group Camp, with reservations required year around. This group campground is separated by 2 freeway miles from Emma Wood State Beach. The group sites offer developed tent camping for groups of up to 30 people and primitive RV camping for groups up to 50 people and 20 vehicles. The maximum length for an RV is 45 feet.

Ventura River Group Camp offers four developed group campsites, each with a capacity of 30 people. Groups may reserve one or more campsites, subject to availability. Camping gear must be carried a short distance from the parking lot to the campsites. Facilities include restrooms, water (no hook-ups), fire rings, tables, and a lighted parking lot.

A primitive RV camping area is also available for groups up to 50 people and a maximum RV length of 45'.

Reservations are required year-round for all camping at Ventura River Group Camp.

There is a day use area in the park, and beach access is available. A bike path connects the park to nearby Ventura and also to the coast highway to the north.

Reservations for Group Camping may be made through the California State Parks reservations system.

Pros: Camping on the ocean/beach
Cons: Loud traffic, not all sites on the beach

Decent park. We thought ocean site would mean beach site. Here is the main problem with this park - not all of the sites are near the beach. When it says ocean site, they mean really really rocky in most of the sites. Basically, the first 20 (if that) sites are near the beach. The rest are not near the beach. After the first 20 or less sites, there is nothing but large rocks. Don't get me wrong, the views are great and being near the ocean is great, but not the same as on the beach. We were in site 46 and it was really long, could have put a 45 foot trailer on that site, but you better bring a bunch of wood or a ton of levelers that can sit on rocks and break to get close to level. If you have levelers, you will still need a ton of extra stuff to get level. There were plenty of RV's with the front tires over 8 inches off the ground. I saw a few 5th wheel trailers that had the front legs completely down and still had to put wood under the tires to get the back up enough to be level. I personally had 20 2"x8"x10"s and that was just barely enough for one side to drive up on to get me level side to side. I was only able to come home with 10 of those boards because the rest had broken in half due to the rocks under them breaking them in half. Now, for the worst part of Emma Wood State Beach...the noise at my campsite from the 101 freeway was ridiculous. When we went down to the beach part of the campground, it seemed much better for road noise. Every other site we walked by seemed to have the road noise. It was worse in the morning at 7am when people were headed to work, but it was always there. Every truck, motorcycle and loud car could be heard. There will be no sleeping in. Back to my site for a second, I forgot to mention that the asphalt for every site is only about 15 feet long, then it drops of 4-6 inches to the dirt/rocks. I can't stress enough how badly the sites are unlevel and really just how many large rocks will be where you want to put your chairs and tables. Back to the park - after the first few sites (about 20), there is about a 1/8-1/4 mile drive to the next 40ish sites, then after that about 1/8 mile drive to the remaining sites. Beware of that if you want to be near someone, you may have sites one number from another, but that could be 1/4 mile away. The train - not bad. I have stayed up the coast at a few campgrounds so I knew what I was getting into with the train noise. I was not aware that freight trains are now taking this route. Only three went past us in a week, but they were really loud and came at all times, unlike the commuter Amtrak. Usually, the Amtrak will not blow it's horn, depending on the driver, but the freight train will. Being 30 feet from your site, makes it scare you a little being so loud. Also, make sure you lock up your stuff. Nothing happened, but there are a lot more homeless going through the garbage (a few times a day) than I expected.

Pros:
Cons:

Stayed at Emma Wood a couple of times before and a couple of times in May/June (1 day each). Stayed in site 70 the first time (great spot as there is only a neighbor on one side of you and the large turn around in the front of you. We had a sea lion come right up to the wall and fall asleep for hours while we were there. We also saw dolphins swimming by. The second time, we stayed in site 85. This is a really long site. I had my 35ft travel trailer and my truck with about 6 feet behind me and 3 feet in front of me. It was fairly level for Emma Wood. The noise from the water drowns out the road noise. We have stayed at other sites in the park and you can hear the highway 101 noise more. The farther from the entrance or the closer to the entrance is the best to not hear the 101. In the middle, you will hear the road noise some (most Harley's and semi-trucks).
