Inside Stone Mountain Park, Good Power and Water

Tight parking on the high side of the road sites.

This review is based on an 8 night stay in September of 2007. Being inside Stone Mountain Park makes this CG a must choice, if visiting Stone Mountain. The CG, by itself is your basic full hookup CG. Include the park and the package becomes much more attractive. If you have a 40' + coach, get a site in loop F. The other loops are very tight for a big rig. I did not include a price because I was here for a rally and paid a rally price. The CG is well maintained. Some sites need to be re-graded. Some trees could use trimming. Do not take site 140F. The acorns dropping from the tree will drive you nuts, at night. I will stay here again.

This review is based on a 4 night stay in August of 2008. I lowered my rating two points because of their pricing. There isn't much choice, on the East side of Atlanta for camping. There was nobody here. About 5 coaches in the entire CG. At $48.00 per night, I can see why the place is vacant. PPA members get 1/2 price the first night only. The information in my previous rating remains accurate.

Inside Stone Mountain State Park

Very tight sites, many very unlevel, high priced.

This campground has such potential to be top-ranked facility but it falls far short of that. There is a small section that can handle big rigs but they are packed in like sardines. Even so,it stays booked way in advance. Getting even a medium-sized rig (I have a 34' 5th wheel) backed in to the other part of the CG is a real challenge. I had no choice but to pull into the campsite across from me, thank goodness no one was in that site. Once I did get squeezed in there was no place to park my truck. My neighbor and I shared space between our two rigs that should have been where would have put our chairs under the awning. Then the site was so unlevel that even though I carry quite a bit of stuff to stack, I could not use my rear stabilizer jacks. I would have needed at least 3' of extra adjustment to get it to reach the ground on one side. This was not an unusual site, most sites had one challenge or another.
This CG is run by a concessionaire, not the state. The staff are just employees, you get the idea that they are burned out from the constant stream of tourists. Just like the ride operators at an amuzement park.
I marked "Would you recommend" as 'Yes'. But this is only because it is real nice to be right inside Stone Mountain Park. If you are attending one of the many festivals they have (Yellow Daisy, Scottish Highland, Chili Cook-off, etc.) you can't beat the private, and free, pontoon boat taxi that takes you directly from the campground over to the festival area.

In need of maintenance

Roads are in rough shape and expected to be repaved in the next year or two by the state of Ga.
Sites are either packed gravel or asphalt. Unless you are in a premium site, you more than likely will have issues with leveling.
Trees need trimming bad, and there are acorn and sweet gum trees available to provide noise for those desiring thump, thumps..
The playground was completely redone this year to a much larger system.
There is a pool but it is small and built prior to all the additional sites. It gets very crowded in the summer.
There are many year round activities for the entire family. Check their website for the list.
There is free transportation to all the sites from the campground during the summer months.
Religious services on Sunday's.
Coffee and breakfast pastries on the weekends.
Trash picked up at your site, all utilities included.
Nice bath houses.
Free wifi that gets bogged down when traffics is heavy.
Staff on site, friendly and helpful for the most part.
Small store with the basics.
Propane available.
Nice views.
Some spaces can be tight but accommodating.
Easy access to campground, always use main entrance for rigs, west entrance has a low bridge.
Close enough for Chinese and pizza delivery.
Walmart within a few miles.
Walking, hiking and biking friendly.
Pet friendly.
Row boat rentals, paddle boat's to come. The river boat no longer runs. The shuttle boats are closed as well. All transportation is with park buses.
As others have stated, this could be a top rated facility with some TLC.
In spite of its faults, it stays booked from spring break through the fall. If you are looking for a well manicured campgrond, you may want to bypass it. If your accepting of some flaws and like to make lemonade from lemons, you'll love your stay.

Roads and sites are in poor condition.

This is not a $50 campground. The roads are, in places, nearly impassible with tree roots. The sites haven't seen a grader in years and the asphalt sites have collapsed. Leveling a coach required wheels off the ground in four instances I saw. On M loop, 3 of the four dryers were inop and I wouldn't put any money in #4, too iffy. It's too bad since the park clearly has the turnover to warrant the repairs.
And who ever heard of a campground where the pool opens at 10am in the summer? With a full house the boy showed up at 10:15, added chemicals and kept everyone out for another hour. The pool also closes if there is lightening within 30 miles of the campground- 30 miles? It spent more time closed than open during our 4 days. No swimming in the lake- fresh water/high heat- I get it.
With a little TLC it could be a 'Must Stay' location, right now it's a drive by.
