East Harbor State Park can be used as a home base for visiting the Lake Erie Islands (South Bass Island / Put-in-Bay) or Ceder Point amusement park. This was the first time we were there. The campground is divided into 4 types of sites or sections. Section "A" is all non-electric (180 sites) About 2/3ers are full shade and nice level paved pads. Section "B" is just about all pull-thru electric trailer sites (120 sites). They are very large with a nice spacing between each site. 85% of of the sites in this section are level. About 50% the sites in this section offer some shade. Section "C" (236 sites)has all electric sites that are somewhat close together and have paved pads that are at 90 degree angles. Also the pad length is on the short side on average. This will cause problems for larger camping units. It does make for some entertainment on Friday during check in time. Also in section "C" there are about 20 "Full Service" sites. These are larger in size and much easier to get into. About 1/3 of the sites here are full shade. All the sites in this section are level. Section "D" is the group section which is all non-electric.
All the sites / sections have an easy walk (1-3 minutes) to the shores of East Harbor which offers a nice grass bank to fish off from. During our 9 days the fish were biting every day. During our June non-holiday trip here which spanned 2 weekends, the park was about 85% full during the weekend. And about 30% during the mid-week. Another thing of note is that there are only 3 showerhouses for 500+ sites. And yes, during prime wash-up time (8-10pm) there were a few times you had to wait. The beach area was a nice paved bike path (1 mile) away. The beach area didn't really hit me. It was kind of run down and the water was mucky. They had a nice camp store that offered most things a camper might want. About 5 miles up the road is the ferry over to Put-in-Bay. We parked at the ferry and took our bikes over to the island. The island is about 1/2 mile wide by about 2 miles long. The island is known for it's many bars and the Perry's Monument. In the other direction from East Harbor is Marblehead Lighthouse. Ceder Point Amusement Park is about a 25 minute drive away. They offer 17 roller-coasters. Trust me my son and me did everyone 4-8 times in the 2 days we went, including the Top Thill Dragster. 0-to 120 MPH. in 3 seconds, then climb 425 feet and back down again and stop. Total ride time 17 seconds. Being 45 years old I think my heart and brain stopped for the 3 seconds it took me and my son to go 0 - 120. I just think their pushing the limit to what the human body can take.
