Description: Medium-sized, peaceful campground located in the heart of the beautiful rolling Hocking Hills. Within 3 miles of Old Man's Cave. The campground is situated at the top of a ridge amongst well trimmed hemlocks that provided lacy shade throughout the day. For those that prefer unobstructed skies for satellite reception, there were more open sites available.

The campground is DEFINITELY a tiered campground. The interior roads are gravel and some will pose a challenge for underpowered trucks pulling large travel trailers or fifth wheels up the somewhat steep inclines. Some roads were steeper than others. so just pick carefully before attempting a grade if your tow vehicle isn't a good match to your camper. The photos on the website are a true representation of the campground.

Even with the tiering, I found the sites to be quite level and spacious. The pull throughs were especially long. Ours was at least 80 feet. Our toad could fit either at the back or front of our motorhome & there was still plenty of room left at either end of the pad. The sites were angled and placed so you had plenty of privacy without having to look at the side of your neighbor's camper. Many sites had 10ft x 15ft gravel patios and a few had large paver patios with an iron table & chairs, a log swing & a fancy fire ring with fire poker. Of course, these site ammenities come at a price. In peak season, those paver sites go for $55 per night. The campground has lesser priced, back-in sites & also some nicely secluded tent sites.

The campground has a small campstore with basic supplies & souveniers, a large & clean pool, a big gameroom, immaculate & well-lit bathrooms/showerhouses, a big pavillion where they show movies on weekends, a playground, cabins for rent, numerous walking trails through the surrounding woods and a 75ft "gem mining" sluice. You purchase bags of gem rough at the campstore that've been pre-loaded with some miscellaneous semi-precious stones or fossils. You then empty the bags in the screened boxes at the sluice, wash away the dirt & find your gems/fossils. The gems can be quartz, obsidian, agate, low grade ruby/emerald/sapphire..etc. It's really a neat activity for kids & adults alike.

I would say the only downside of this campground is it's steep price. The nightly price per site was for 2 adults with 2 pets. Children are an additional cost. I found it unusual for a campground advertised as a "family campground" that the campsite pricing did not include any children.

Aside from the pricing, I loved this campground, it's location & ammenities. I would certainly recommend it.

UPDATE: As of 2009, this is another CG that has succumbed to being a KOA. Now called Logan/Hocking Hills KOA.

Pros: Beautiful setting, spacious sites, ammenities, cleanliness, location to popular area attractions
Cons: High price, children cost extra, 2 night minimum stay, payment in full at time of reservation

Price paid is for a fhu/pull-thru/gravel patio site.

Pros:
Cons: WARNING: THIS CG HAS LOW VOLTAGE ISSUES

After spending the 4th of July holiday weekend here, I have to submit an update to my prior review.

Although this KOA welcomes "big rigs", its electrical system is woefully inadequate to accomodate even half a dozen RV's needing 50 amp.

I will preface this update with the fact that temperatures were in the low 90's with high humidity & the campground was at capacity this past weekend. This would put a strain on even the beefiest of electrical systems, but it was the downfall of the system at this campground.

We started having issues when our Progressive Industries EMS shut down the power to our coach. A check of the display indicated a low voltage problem (the EMS will shut down when voltage drops below 104). The EMS restored power after its preset time, but when our a/c kicked in again, the EMS shut the power off again. We started our generator & I went to the camp office to report the problem. The staff there proceeded to tell me they never had an issue with this before, no one had previously reported a problem & the issue was either our electrical cord or our converter. In effect, it was not their problem. I requested they send someone down to check the voltage at our site. Kurt came out, had us disconnect our power cord & proceeded to test the outlet with a voltmeter. The meter numbers never completely settled but Kurt declared we had 112 volts (NOT under load) at our outlet & left. A short time later, a coach in the row next to us had it's generator auto start. Now I knew there was a problem. Borrowing a neighbor's voltmeter, we tested 6 surrounding, adjacent sites & the voltages ranged from 99 to 119, depending on when a/c's were cycling on & how far "down the line" from the original feed a site's electrical box was. Armed with this information, I reported the results back to the owners at the campstore. Only then, did another staff member admit a breaker blew on a 50amp row earlier & they have never had "that many big rigs at the campground at once drawing that much current before".

Luckily, we had very nice neighbors in our 2 rows, & we all worked together putting our HWH's/fridges on propane & running just 1 a/c on low (until temps cooled at night) to help reduce voltage usage allowing those farther down the electrical lines to limp along...until one row, eventually, completely lost power & ended up running their generators.

Now I understand it's a somewhat older campground & when there is high heat & humidity, electrical issues can occur if there's a large demand on the system. But what irked me was the attitude of the staff & owners blaming the problem on my coach when they knew there were electrical troubles that weekend.

Long story short, until the campground addresses their electrical issues, I cannot recommend it for big rigs when the conditions are as they occured in this instance.
