Description:
|
This campground is located within Stone Mountain State Park, located just north of Elkin, NC near the Blue Ridge Parkway. This campground has huge lots with nice picnic and brick fireplace. Very level paved lots with very clean bath houses. Best sites are 44-49. There are a ton of trails to hike and scenery. Very easy trails to walk.
Stone Mountain is not immediately visible upon entering the park that bears its name, but this magnificent 600-foot granite dome is well worth the wait. Sunlight and shadows dance across a broad tapestry of stone. White-tailed deer emerge from the security of the forest to graze on meadow grasses at the mountain's base. The scenery is only one attraction of the park.
Test your fly-fishing techniques in more than 17 miles of designated trout waters. Or, with more than 16 miles of trails, take a hike in the park. Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1975, Stone Mountain is bounded on the north by the Blue Ridge Parkway and on the west by the Thurmond Chatham Game Lands. More than 13,747 acres of mountain beauty offer opportunities for outdoor activities of all kinds.

I took my wife and son here this past fall. We stayed at site 48. Best site in my opinion. Very private, large sites. Everything in this campground still looks brand new. Lots of walking trails nearby. Nice stream down middle of park. Paved level sites. Great place to visit. We plan on returning next month. Highly recommend this park.

This was a perfect ending for our 13 day, 8 state, 2,100 mile trip!
We had a 31 ft rented motorhome (our maiden voyage RVing), and easily backed it into space on 1st try. Camped right next to stream running over rocks. Just beautiful!
We have 4 children ranging in age from 7 to 10 years. They had a blast playing in the water a bit (a little chilly still), hiking, and having a campfire.
Water in showers was a bit chilly but no big problem.
Roads in and out were a bit slow but it gave us a chance to really look at the countryside.
We can't wait to go back.
