Update: Salt Springs and Cedar Key -- 2/22/19

We've been staying at the Salt Springs Recreation Area in Ocala National Forest in north-central Florida. The actual springs (pictured) allow swimming in water that is a constant 72F year-round.

The grounds and buildings are immaculately kept with neat trails and walkways. The camping facilities are among the best we've ever seen...

Update: The Not Forgotten Coast -- 2/19/19

Traveling from Pensacola to Salt Springs, we decided to drive the Forgotten Coast Highway, Florida 98, to see for ourselves what that part of the world looks like.

I realized that we would also bear witness to the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. We both grew up in the heartland's Tornado Alley, but nothing could prepare us for the devastation...

Update: Fort Pickens & Food -- 2/15/19

We toured the well-preserved ruins at Fort Pickens today, just a stone's throw from our campsite.

What remains of the fort is still a very impressive edifice - the largest coastal defense fort in the US arsenal. It was built brick by brick in the 1830's using slave labor, and alternately held by both Union and Confederate forces during...

Update: We Found Florida -- 2/8/19

We made it to Fort Pickens just outside Pensacola Beach, and it's 70F. It is truly amazing what a 95 degree temperature increase will do for one's general disposition. And fresh seafood.

Speaking of amazing seafood, if you're ever in the Pensacola area, you have to try the fabulous fare at Joe Patti's. The seafood gumbo is divine, the prices...

Update: Digging Out & Loading -- 2/1/19

Our planned departure for the Florida Panhandle is tomorrow, and it hit a balmy 10F today, so I went to the storage yard and discovered they had plowed in the NewAire.

I expected a bit of shoveling, but nothing like what I encountered. So I bit the bullet, dug her out, got the generator fired up, and I'm heating the engine block as...

Update: Battling a Deep Freeze -- 1/27/19

Our planned departure for the Florida Panhandle is only a week away, but local overnight temps have been well below zero Fahrenheit and falling fast.

Because the NewAire has been parked since October, I decided yesterday morning to get her fired up in advance, figuring if I encountered any...

Update: Preparing to Head South -- 1/24/19

We are bound for the Florida Panhandle in a little over a week, but right now the Chicago area is entering the deepest deep freeze yet in an otherwise mild winter.

The snow isn't going anywhere as temperatures are expected to hit -17F by the middle of next week. And if you believe local forecasters, there's even more snow on the way....

Update: More Mirror Woes -- 12/1/18

The mirror replacement verdict is in!

As previewed in my previous woeful post, I finally got the gumption up to call NewMar about replacement mirrors. (An original is not available.) As I feared, replacing both sides would run right around $1,500. That's before paint, etc.

While NewMar respectfully declined to disclose their OEM supplier, some digging around online finally led me to Velvac. Of course, the mirror I need is...

Update: Storage Woes -- 11/25/18

I was tinkering around inside the RV a few days ago and just happened to run through the battery and tank level display panel. Surprisingly, my FRESH water tank read 3/4 full; that's about 30 gallons. My first reaction was faulty sensors (although the panel has always been accurate in the past). After all, I had opened both the fresh and hot water low point drains while returning from our last trip of the year.

Just to be sure, I opened...

Update: Winterization -- 11/12/18

Our next road trip isn't until the first of February, 2019, so we secured the NewAire for cold weather storage.

In addition to normal end-of-season service (oil change, filters, chassis lube, etc.), our winterization process included the following steps:
  1. Fill fuel tank and treat with non-gelling diesel additive.
  2. Run treated diesel into the

Update: Power Tune -- 10/15/18

You can't have too much torque or horse power for accelerating a diesel pusher like the NewAire onto the highway or climbing grades.

Fortunately, Ag Diesel Solutions makes a plug and play module that adds an additional 65 hp and 100+ lb-ft of torque to an otherwise dependable Cummins ISB 5.9L. The module achieves this performance increase by changing...

Update: Pantry Storage -- 10/3/18

Storage space in the NewAire comes at a premium, both outside and in. One of the first inside projects we did was to add a Pull Out Pantry to the narrow cabinet located next to the control panel above the fridge. The wood pantry shelves first had to be shortened by 1.5", and we replaced the drawer slides with a 20" set to fit the reduced cabinet depth....

Update: New Tires -- 9/26/18

The tires on our NewAire were just 4 years old but badly weather checked on the sidewalls. I don't know if such tire deterioration is region-related, but I've seen this problem before in northern climates.

Fortunately, our matchless dealer/broker, Steinbring Motorcoach in Garfield MN, intervened on our behalf by contacting the tire manufacturer, who...

We recently took ownership of our third coach, a 2001 Newmar NewAire. While our first goal was downsizing, moving to an original NewAire was quite an adjustment. But the advantage to this pioneering, all electric design...
