The Best Mile on the Beach construction project is underway and is moving right along. Pile driving machines are installing telephone pole sized posts at close intervals and you can actually see that work progressing on the construction cams.

Colleen and I toured the area yesterday in the beautiful weather. The sun was out and the temperatures were in the 70s. What a day! The project is going to tie 2 piers together by a boardwalk that will stretch for a mile. The boardwalk will go from 14th Avenue Pier to the 2nd Avenue Pier off of Oceanside Boulevard.

According to Koribrett Turner-Vaught everything appears to be on schedule. The almost 10 Million dollar project promises to revitalize the mile stretch in the prime downtown area. The board walk will at times wind through dunes and grasses with small parks offering sitting areas to enjoy the beach.

Currently the Myrtle Beach City Council is determining what will be allowed on the boardwalk in regard to pets, bicycles, roller bladeing and other activities and they are trying to figure out if they will allow sidewalk vendors.

As the boardwalk makes its way along the beach, it is expected that the business adjoining the boardwalk will tie into the structure and offer dinning, beverage and entertainment facilities.

Key to the design expectations is that all the structures or accesses to the boardwalk from the attached facilities should maintain a uniform look. At this time there are at least 40 establishments that adjoin the mile long boardwalk. It is expected that the boardwalk will be completed by June 2010.

Columns rise from the sand and they stretch along the beach. Catch basins and storm water runoff pipes as large as 48 inches have been installed following the project.

Thousands of board feet of lumber will be used in the construction of the project. This is shot was taken looking south from the 14th Avenue Pier.

The historic 14th Avenue pier will be the northernmost structure on the new boardwalk. The pier has a restaurant and souvenir shop. A preferred fishing spot, it is very popular with the locals. There isn’t any admission to the pier and it provides a nice way to spend time observing the surf action and marine life close to shore.

New dunes have to be constructed and many feet of old boardwalk needed to be removed in order for the new construction to be allowed to proceed. Visible are some of the drain pipes that will be used to manage street water runoff that flow into the ocean.

This is a typical high rise hotel featuring ocean front balconies. These structures are very popular with tourists and are largely sold out during eh summer months. The new boardwalk will tie into all these structures for the mile that it stretches along the beach. In the fall & winter, rooms in these structures can be had for 50% off at times.

Myrtle Beach continues to build on its entertainment value and uniqueness. In 2001 Myrtle Beach hosted the 2001 Myrtle Beach National Rally which was the 1st of National Rally. The rally was held at the Ocean Lakes Family Campground which is now a 4 time recipient of the ARVC National (Large) Campground of the Year Award. 2010 will mark the 10th Anniversary of the Myrtle Beach Rally.

“Creating Family Memories That Last a Lifetime!” is the motto of the campground. If you are considering passing through the Myrtle Beach area please make plans to enjoy all the entertainment venues which are numerous. Bring your favorite beach chair, bring your sun tan lotion and bring your flip flops and get ready to relax and enjoy the beach!
