Texas Drivers license for motor homes

Posted 09-15-2011 at 06:42 AM by JimmyLeggett

Any vehicle that weighs 26001 pounds or more, requires a Class "B" license. This is not a CDL but is sometimes referred to as a non-commercial CDL. What ever the various names, the bottom line is that; we who drive Motor Homes that weight in at 26000 pounds and beyond and almost all the diesels meet that criteria in Texas are required to have a Class B license.

The written test comes solely from Chapter 15 of the Texas Drivers Handbook. There is a study and review section in Annex B. It took me ten minutes to complete the written exam. Then a driving test is required. They test on four things; Situational awareness, control of the vehicle, staying in the marked lanes, turns, etc. how well turns are made, use of the turn signals, use of the mirrors; backing the coach and Parrnell parking are also required. Before the driving begins, the operator must demonstrate knowledge of the air brakes and how to test them.

The driving portion was about 40 minutes in Corsicana.

BetterRVing.com has a set of seven videos that are most helpful. I know they are produced by Lazy-Days in Florida but no matter who did them, they are an extremely valuable tool and I highly recommend them. There are also videos on Utube of various quality but these were the best.

Now that this little obstacle is behind me I can drive a motor home legally in Texas.

Is this TX class B license required if your vehicle is registered outside of TX? If so, I wonder how many have these class B licenses?

If your registered outside Texas, I would surmise that if your legal in your state, then you are certainly good to go in texas

This is my first post, but want to thank all those who contributed to various blogs on the Texas Class A license. The information received was extremely useful. After speaking with DPS clerks in two offices and finding a lack of knowledge or desire to find the information, I ended up in the Gatesville Driver's License Office. No waiting and a clerk familiar with the requirements for Class A non-commercial license issuance were the high points. If you're in the Central Texas area, it is worth your time to try this office.
