Camp site hunting

Posted 01-13-2019 at 09:23 PM by mwhitedg

Our children, Emily, now 20 and Ryan, now 16, have been camping since they were just babies. I remember the first trip in our first Popup camper when Ryan was just 5 months old. It was a warm Columbus day weekend in Michigan and the excitement of that first trip is still fresh.

We mostly camp in State or National parks, and for the best spots, reservations fill very quickly. I enjoy the hunt for the best site, looking through the satellite images of each campground, trying to find the spots with the deepest drives, and most trees. The other part is getting the reservation window nailed down. It is a great feeling finding the site you want booked up to the day you want and setting the alarm for midnight to be the first one logged in and ready to book when the site becomes available to reservations.

We have a two week trip planned for this summer, and the sites that reserve a year out are all booked ... I am now waiting for the other sites to open 6 months in advance. Patience ... the time is close, the sites are still available, and my favorites are locked down up to the day I want them. Perfect! I just need to set my alarm so I don't miss it.
