Mission Statement: Supporting thoughtful exchange of knowledge, values and experience among RV enthusiasts.
Hi Everyone;
This is Patty and I have been RVing for 6 years now. Just about everything I now know about RVing I learned the hard way! I can look back now and laugh, but believe me it wasn’t funny at the time!
When I started RVing I was a 50 something year old widow, alone and desperate to fulfill my dream of travel, kayaking and bicycling. Being from Old School “I Am Women, Hear Me Roar”, I would not let anything/anybody stand in my way! I am going to tell about my experiences in the hope that all of you can learn and/or have a good laugh!

REALITY RV - POP GOES THE WEASEL (2nd Blog)

Okay so now my sister and I survived our first RV towing trip and are all setup at our beautifully paved and deeply wooded site with water/electric hookup. During check-in the desk attendant had mentioned several times about bear awareness and safety precautions. I made special efforts to hide my concerns because I didn’t want to alarm my sister, but deep inside I was a little scared. Returning from going out to dinner, I opened a bottle of bubbly Moscato and we settled down to watch “The Great Outdoors”. The movie was very fitting and we laughed the whole way through it. Soon we fell asleep with a half bottled of corked moscato wine sitting on the counter.
Sometime in the wee hours of the morning, I awoke to the site of my sister standing at the foot of my bed, wringing her hands and looking quite alarmed. She informed me that she heard a noise and something was definitely hit the roof and outside the kitchen window.
I failed to mention earlier that I am profoundly deaf and without my hearing aids, (which I take out at night to sleep), I don’t hear much at all. I read lips quite well and understood as she continued to tell me that something was out there while I put on my hearing aids. I was trying to act brave and calm, but my heart was pounding with fright. I turned on my overhead light and lifted my window blind to peer out into the night. I jumped back with fright as I saw my own reflection in the window. I turned off my light and tried to look out, but it was so dark outside that couldn’t see a thing! My outside porch light was off (big mistake) and it could only be turned out by a switch located underneath it on the outside of the door. Playing brave, I opened the door just enough to reach out and flip the light switch on. I honestly was just waiting for someone or something to grab my hand! With the light now on, I pulled my hand in and quickly locked the door. I then looked out each window but could see nothing. I proceeded outside with my flashlight and bear spray but once again, found nothing. Convinced it was something from the overhead trees that fell, we went finally back to sleep.
Around 8am we both got up and I proceeded to make coffee. As I was getting the coffee cups, I noticed the cork from the wine lying on the far counter corner. I placed the cork back on the wine bottle and sat down to enjoy our first breakfast in my new RV. Just then we both heard a loud popping noise. My sister shouted “That’s it, that is the same noise I heard last night!” I looked over toward the noise and lo and behold, spotted the cork that had just popped from the carbonated wine. The cork had obviously hit the ceiling and landed on the counter. We both just laughed and laughed.

LESSON LEARNED:
Always have some lighting on outside of the RV at night to allow visibility. I purchased 4 solar and motion activated lights and placed them on all sides of my trailer with command large picture hanging strips. The lights come on only when someone or something comes near the trailer and shortly turn off when no more motion is detected.
