Now, if you were to do a monthly audit of the number of unique accounts logged in each month and then average out how many actually come back regularly, you'll have the real size of the community  vs number of accounts that have been created, though the logged in on a day is not a bad substitute measurement for community size.

Yeah, for one, the total member number doesn't take into account the members who reregister because they forgot their passwords or those that register & are never heard from again & never made a post. Sorting the member list by number of posts lowest to highest will show you just how many of the latter there are (46,600+)

Not uncommon, I usually do my calculations on a couple communities I maintain based on the Last Activity/Logon Time stamp in the user account records and then average the amount of page views/content submission they make to figure if they are an active community member or a passer by.
The ratio of User accounts generated to active users is a good measurement of how healthy yer community is in retaining regulars.
One community I maintain which is small has a total of 8700 registered accounts to 1626-2000 daily active participants that actually log in (Alot of the site can be used without needing to log in).
