19.5 inch tire safety problem?

I dropped by Discount Tire for a tire pressure check. They refused, telling me they were not allowed to air up 19.5" tires because they might blow up. Has anyone else heard this? I googled the subject and could find nothing about it.

I'll be interested in what the responses are on this one.
Maybe they meant they can't do it because they'll get their hands dirty.
That's just plain nuts; given you have a 2010 vehicle. The tires can't be that old, can they?

Discount Tire had a tech killed by an exploding RV tire so they no longer sell or service those sizes.

I have a friend who is a manager at a Discount Tire. They used to sell, mount balance, rotate my MH tires. Now I just tease him and say "you guys sure have got to be a bunch of sissies, even many new pick ups have 19.5" tires". He agrees and does'nt like it, but it is a new corporate policy/ rule. He said he feels they will be forced to start doing 19.5s again because he admits they will lose business.
I guess workmans comp and OSHA will require them to buy more appropiate tools and safety gear for truck tires.
He did'nt tell me this, but one emplyee getting hurt in a big chain business, can make a lot of changes.
One Walmart told me that my 16" tires/ wheels on my old CL C were just too heavy for his employees.

The store I use here in the NW part of town says that they can get the 19.5's I would need when that time comes, but at present he can't mount or service them. I use their tires on the '65 and our two daily drivers. Hope they get the issue setteled on the 19.5s setteled soon for the benefit of the RV crowd.

Have been using and running Discount Tires as replacements since '91 from as small as a Focus to a 31 Coachman 316KS class c without a problem.

I have these same tires on my 83 Pace Arrow and the were installed by and are serviced by Pete's Road Service one of the largest tires road services in California and the have no problems with them.

I have 22.5's as do many. Plenty of tire outlets handle bigger tires, also there is a set up that allows filling these tires at a distance basically a hose extention allowing a person to be ten/ twelve feet away. I learned of it in another thread (no, I did not get one). Not a bad idea for anyone filling a high pressure tire.

I think the hose extension is for use when getting the bead to seat when mounting a new tire, not when just adding a small amount of pressure to a tire in use. I watched someone use a long hose extension 30 years ago when mounting new Michelins for my Midas Mini class C.

From the F53 owners manual:

"Tire inflation information
All tires with Steel Carcass Plies (if equipped):
This type of tire utilizes steel cords in the sidewalls. As such, they
cannot be treated like normal light truck tires. Tire service, including
adjusting the air pressure, must be performed by personnel trained,
supervised and equipped according to Federal Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. For example, during any
procedure involving tire inflation, the technician or individual must
utilize a remote inflation device, and ensure that all persons are clear of
the trajectory area."

Yep, went through 2 weeks of intensive training on tire inflation. Now before leaving on a trip, I always position 2 supervisors between me and my tires while I check the pressure and add air.

I buy all my tires from DT and have never had a problem with them. They treat me good, even when I have special requests.

I bought my 19.5s from them, and had them delivered to S&S Tire for mounting and balancing.
