In another thread regarding the 2008 Meridian/Journey I gave the improper torque rating for the Cummins ISB 6.7L engine found in the Meridian and Journey lineup.
Mike at Winnebago had told me that it was 660lb tq but today wrote to me stating that he was later informed that it is 750lb torque.
My wife and I really like the 37ft Meridian but the engine is a step down from our current CAT at 300hp, 860lb tq. I am surprised that Winnebago has choosen this ISB engine especially since they have also increased the size of the 2008 lineup from 34', 36' and 38' to 37' and 39'.
Some of you might think that this isn't really a big deal but I pull my race car in an enclosed trailer, 8000lbs, all over the Northwest. There are lots of mountains to traverse and engine torque helps going over those mountains at a respectable speed (50-55mph).
I don't want a motorhome over 38ft long so stepping up the Winnebago/Itasca lineup will not work for me since they are all 40ft MHs.
I am sad to say I will be looking at Monaco, Tiffin, and Newmar for our next motorhome.
Com'on Winnebago put the Cummins ISC (360hp, 1050tq) in the Journey/Meridian line up.

I think a useful way to evaluate the scenario is to calculate the expected GCVWR (coach + tow) and then figure out the ratio you want of pounds of GCVWR to ft lbs of torque.
With our 1200 ft lbs of ISL torque, we easily manage our 36,500 GCVWR and probably would be comfortable (adequate power) with 38,000 or even 40,000 GCVWR.

Garbageman,
Be aware that lack of a CAT engine and offreing only a ISB 6.7L for the '08 Journey/Meridian isn't solely a Winnebago decision.
Freightliner dropped CAT this year. The CAT C7 option was spposed to be replaced with the Mercedes-Benz 960. Winnebago was going to have the MB 960 as the up-sell option to the ISB in the Journey/Merdian and also be the base engine in the Tour/Ellipse. But soon after FL went into production the MB 960 failed emissions and was dropped. FL offerred up Cummins ISC as an alternative. So it appears Winnebago passed on the ISC for some business reason or ??

vicsryd, thanks for the info. My issue with Winnebago is that they don't offer the ISC as an option. A MH with a GCWR of over 39,000lb would be under powered with the ISB Cummins. Just IMO.
