29R - Testing Fresh Water Tank for Leak - R&R

2008 29R Fresh Water Tank R&R
VIN: 1F6MF53Y370A06760

Question: How do I identify if I have a leak in my fresh water tank? And, if so, what is the best access point to remove the tank?

Indication is that when the chassis is angled with the driver’s side higher than passenger side (say 3” when parked on curb with a street that has a high crown) and the tank is full (when level), I am finding water dripping from below passenger side compartment bay to the rear of dual axle. I have observed water on the structure beneath the tank. When the chassis is fairly level, this leakage stops.

I have noted in WBGO literature that the tanks are tested before installation…I think that may be a static air test or submersion. Can you provide more information on the testing process?

Is it possible to cap off factory orifices and test the tank? Might you provide any other thoughts on how to check the system before any efforts to remove the tank? I have checked all the water exit points and the plumbing to/from the water pump and find all the fittings are dry.

Removal/Replacement Procedure

Looking at both possible access points for the fresh water tank, that is from the storage area on both the driver’s (left) and passenger’s (right), it appears that access for the tank might be best from the driver’s side. Looks like removal of the panel with water connections and the electrical for the leveling system and water pump may provide clearance to “pull out” the tank once connections to the water pump, overflow and other plumbing are disconnected. Is it necessary to remove the bay door and drill out the rivets that secure the painted black ‘fascia’ panel opening to the outrigger subframe?

I’m rather skilled at automotive and RV repairs so I have a great deal of hesitation in putting my confidence in the typical RV repair outlet (especially LaMesa and Camping World, both Winnebago dealers in the Sacramento CA area.)

I would certainly appreciate any suggestions or thoughts on the situation.

The tank has an over flow port, so if the tank is full and the rv is unlevel, most likely you'll get some water leaking from the tank.

I received an email from Winnebago. They test by submersing in water before install, then test again with water fill after assembly. If a problem is identified, best place to remove on 29R is thru driver's side bay, rear of dual axle. Easy enough. Several outside threads on repairing polyethylene tanks on YouTube.
