Yes you read it right. My local dealer wants $4,400 to replace the basement air in my 04 Suncruiser. The compressor is shot.
So what have the rest of you been paying for replacements and where or how did you get it done.

Compressors can be replaced. $4,400 sounds like a lot to me. Shop around.

Check with your local residential AC shops. They can find the compressor on line or you can. It is just like any other unit except it is in your RV.

we bought 07 suncruicer new in okla city, basement air did'nt work,

checked it out
said it doing all it could. we burned up for five yrs.
In sept 2011 I took it to tulsa ,ok to have 3rd air put on. service
manager said let me check it out first. it had some bad parts ,warranty
out. he put me in a brand new unit $3800. he said it would cost with in
a few hundred dollars to repair the old one. one compressor was out.
and it would still be five years old. I did keep the old one. yours ,if will
come and get it. Takes fork lift to get it out of unit. new one works good
now, but it's not hot yet. hope this helps

my heatpump kept blowing breakers on the stage 1 compressor, reversed capacitors , still the same , changed around wiring to check 2nd stage compressor, it blew breakers when 1st (now 2nd stage) compressor tried to kick in, short story, service tested and came to same conclussion. quoted 300 for new compressor and about 500 labor. Removed unit to replace compressor, powered up to recheck system, worked great ! dug deeper, ended up being a wire shorting out to the compressor, repaced and rerouted wire .. all seems fine now, total bill 450.00

I'm w/the "that's a boatload of money" crowd. HVAC systems are a conglomeration of parts. Each has specs. Each can be tested. Somebody who is great at servicing AC's can get your setup fixed for a lot less.

Cost me $1000.0 on a 2001 Adventurer.
Contacted Winnebago. Got compressor part #.
Service shop ordered and installed.
Think compressor was about $350.0 balance was labor.

Mark & Christine,
You can save yourself a lot of money if you don't mind doing a little research and managing the repair yourself. Since we both have 2004 Winnies, your basement unit would be exactly like mine.
If you can find a mobile repair service, the work can be done right at your house. I had an independent repairman that works mostly on ThermoKing units you see on semi-truck refrigerated trailers. He charged me $110 to fix a leak, add a schrader valve, and a full recharge of freon. I had the unit pulled out and open so all he had to do is the refrigeration work.
I have a file you can download that details the entire procedure to pull your unit out and disassemble for repairs. I suggest you take a look at all the photos I provided and then decide if this is something you want to tackle. In the past 3 yrs many iRV2 members have been successful at doing their own repairs and expressed their thanks for the procedure I wrote.
In my signature below, there's a link to my website and near the bottom you can download the "Basement A-C Removal Procedure" pdf file.
Good luck,
Bill
