AC Ducting Question

We're sitting here in New Orleans just about to wrap up the Great River Road Caravan. My wife was cleaning out the cabinets on the rear wall above the bed when she noticed a cool breeze every time the AC kicked in.
Upon closer inspection I noticed there is a small rectangular section that intrudes into the overhead cabinet on the passengers side. It's about 6" high and 6" wide and runs from the top of the cabinet to within about 1/8" from the bottom. It looks like it's intended to be a small AC outlet inside the cabinet.

At first I thought I might have a problem with the AC ducts seperating behind the rear cap. However it appears that the bottom is intended to be open since it has a block in each corner designed to keep the luann plywood from touching the bottom of the cabinet. Does anyone else have the same type of arrangement in the rear overhead cabinet, and if so is it meant to duct cool air into the cabinet?

Yes we have basement air. Today I did a little more investigation and the air flow is minimal. It appears as though the duct to the ceiling vents intrudes slightly into the cabinet. The bottom of the duct is raised slightly off the floor of the cabinet, possibly to minimize transmission of vibration. Like most sheet metal ducts the bottom of the duct is an independant piece fastened to the sidewalls by rivets. The air flow we're experiencing may be the small amount leaking past the unsealed junction of the vertical and horizontal components.
