Adventurer Transmission Problem

I have a workhorse 22 with Allison tranny. After remaining stationary for 8 months, my coach was driven about 20 miles for an accident estimate. The roundtrip ride was uneventful, save for the tranny warning light coming on just as I pulled back into our site. This was immediately followed by a pungent burning odor. The light remains on even after the unit has cooled overnight. Have any of you had similar problems? I cringe at the thought that the transmission has burned up. Is it safe to drive to the nearest Allison repair place (about ten miles or so) or should I have it towed? Any suggestions, comments or moral support would be most welcomed.

David

David;

I believe your transmission is in Limp Mode. Based on my experience it is in third gear and will stay there until it is repaired. I recommend having it towed to a Allison Shop.

What year and how many miles? I would call the Allison shop and ask about driving in or towing.

Thanks for your replies. The Adventurer is a 2004 and has about 31,000 miles on it. We are full-timers. One note to add: the transmission cooler fans were not engaged when I checked right after the light came on and the strong burning smell was noticed. We are in Texas and the outside temp was in the nineties. It seems to me those fans should have been engaged. Is there any way for me to check them?

davmarmax, When you first start-up the engine, the fans will run for a couple of minutes and then cycle off into a stand-by mode. If this isn't happening then your auxiliary fan's electrical system is not working.

In checking your fluid, the transmission should be level, in park and at normal operating temperature. Withdraw the red stick and check the fluid level. Smell the dipstick to see if there is a definite burnt odor.

It appears to be doing just that, so I don't think I've got a serious tranny problem. I have an appointment at a Workhouse service center and hopefully diagnostics will solve the problem. I was told it's save to drive as long as the dashboard signal isn't blinking.

Thanks so much for all your comments/suggestions.

Dave
