Affordable winter resorts South west

We are Planning on retiring Dec 2015 and want to "snowbird" in Southern Cali or Arizona Jan-April 2016! Las Vegas is less expensive $565/mo. but way colder in winter Where do you seasoned vets go that's affordable. Most RV parks I've checked with Want $800-$1800/mo. plus power. Is that about right? More if near San Diego! would like to be near the ocean or a big lake. Am I dreaming you can get a site around $400/mo. or less?
Recommendations please
Thank you
Milo

Yuma has the best winter weather. Much more reasonable, and much to see and do!

San Diego is priced very high, anywhere near the ocean will be well over $1000/month plus electricity. Don't rule out Vegas as it is much more reasonable and there is much to do off the strip. Great restaurants and entertainment if you seek out "local" casinos and take in show in a place like the South Point.

The weather in LV is really very good and does not get that cold, at least not to us and we are from sunny Cali.

option in Yuma to rent rv lots in residential areas at a bargain price. If you don't need all the perks of a resort, this gives you a home like feeling in a real neighborhood.

hi:

we have been snowing birding in so. cal. for the last 4 years. (one month each in palm springs, san diego, long beach.) yes, i think you are dreaming to get a site for $400/mo. or less.

from reading the forums, your dream is way more possible in az.

cheers,
pdq

Not very much to do in Yuma. Tucson has a lot more to offer in the way of activity with better variety of entertainment, restaurants, etc. It's also much prettier if you like outdoor recreational activities like biking/hiking. Prices are likely the same as Yuma but if you do find a place for $ 400 a month you're probably going to be somewhere you may not like

A lot depends on what you expect to find in an RV park, in the way of activities , pool & other amenities are going to cost more.
I'm currently spending my winters at a 1 star park , that has 5 star people staying there. I budget $500, a month for , rent, power, propane and cable/internet; and seldom go over. But as datrbone8 says , you may not like it.
The friends we have made in the park keep us coming back, but over the past few years health issues are thinning those out.
The park has a small golf course, that we enjoy, and the snowbirds do 90% of the maintenance, and our view is the Colorado River through the windshield. But the nearest full grocery store is 11 miles away.
There are inexpensive places out there, but you have to decide what your looking for and balance that with what you're willing to pay.
Check out the Lake Havasu City and Parker AZ area, in your search for a spot, that area may suit you.

Yuma and Tucson both have much to do in and away from the city. If you google them you will find a great many hidden gems of places that most folks dont look for. The natural, cultural and historical abound!
If you are adventurous, you will NEVER run out of grand things to see and do in Arizona!

I have spent the winters in Yuma several times. We find plenty to do .... how does the old fart's joke go "I got up in the morning and had nothing to do and when I went to bed I only had half of it done" .... we stay in a full service resort: swimming pools, golf group, shuffle board, horse shoes, pottery, lapidary, wood shop, tennis, pickle ball, volley ball, quilting, café, laundry ... there are groups that go four wheeling in the desert, hiking in the desert, eating out.... and like everywhere in AZ HAPPY HOURS while watching beautiful sunsets.

Personally we square dance three times a week, and I play golf twice a week, and we go to free jazz concerts outdoors once a week.

Our resort is pricey ... we pay more than what you suggest your budget might be ... however there are bare bones parks outside of the city for less than your budget ... they have fewer amenities and you will be driving further for groceries and activities.

FYI, we have spent December and January in Yuma for the last two seasons and it is grand. But those are the "cold" months in AZ. Did 3 months in Casa Grande and Tucson in mid-winter, but too many cold nites for us; yeah, spoiled.
But being in one place too long gives us the travel itch!
We move around a lot and do monthly and 2-weeks in many places, like Benson, Tucson, Sierra Vista, Mesa, etc. Also the State parks: Patagonia Lakes, Picacho Peak, Catalina, etc.
In warmer months like October, November, March, April we are in the Northern areas like Flaggstaff, Prescott, Verde Valley, Cottonwood, etc.

We have spent the past 7 winters at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas. There is plenty to do here besides casinos. The weather gets a bit cool at times but not too bad. There are quite a few parks here. I haven't checked the prices so can't tell you about that.
