I'm getting ready to be a little adventurous tomorrow and do the first fluid change on the tranny. I found the Transynd fluid at $35.35/gal and the filter kit @ $65.92 at a local allison shop so all toll should be around $250.00 including tax + my labor. Looks like I'll save a minimum of $200 to $250 by doing it my self. The highest quote was $750 and low was $450 . Talked it over with the Allison rep ( fine guy with a few tips) and he indicated should'nt be any issues. Maybe a little messy but hey, it's my dirt & gravel drive way . I will most likely buy a tourqe wrench over at Northern Tools tonight but I not including that in the costs as it becomes another needed tool in my work shop. Some of the quotes I received indicated ranges of 18 qts to 27 qts of the Transynd . Don't know why the large range but Allison rep indicated 19 qts so buy 1 extra (5 x gals) since they do not know how much will stay in cooler. He also indicated that the filters have 2 magnetic rings on each filter so be careful not to screw them up. Just wipe clean with cloth. Tourqe the filter plates back to 40 ft/lbs (reason for tourqe wrench). Wish me luck, will let you guys know outcome. ps: me doing it does not destroy the warrenty!

Also, been away from the post a while so I'm glad to be back.....;

dog

Dog, To me it's it's pretty much like an engine oil change, two filters but drain, clean, replace. Not complicated. Mine took 19 quarts

I've replaced our 3000 MH filters several times, I have yet to find any magnetic rings on any of the filters. They're not mentioned in the instructions for the 3000 MH either. There is one on the 1000 and 2000 series as I remember.

I have changed mine also and did not find the "magnetic" rings. I don't think they are on the 3000. My tranny uses 19 quarts +/- a little --- use the level indicator that the 3000 provides to see when you are "OK". I bought an underbed storage tray from Wally World and that is what I use to catch the fluid when I do the change --- big enough to not let any fluid drop on the ground and has wheels to help in pulling from under the beast.

I Don;t have the 3000, but I know for a fact the 2500MH does, just changed mine and was warned to clean and reinstall. Large 5 gallon oil spill container worked fine for oil. like ealier post, as easy as changing oil.

X2 I have done mine and not a big deal just a plain oil change with two filters. Just make sure you work clean don't let any dirt go int the Trans.

JK_and_dog,
I just did a complete change over from Dexron to Transynd a couple of weeks ago. I followed Toms rules on changing it and although it was a bit heart breaking to watch not only the 40K mileage super clear Dexron run out into the drain pan, it was REALLY heart breaking to watch 400 mile Transynd come spewing out. It looked like it was coming from the original containers. But, now I've got 100,000 miles to go before I need to even think I will need to change it again. Yep, a bit on the pricey side for the onset but, the bennies will far out weigh the initial cost(s). I paid $165.00 ea. for two five gallon containers.

And with my sump, which contained the taller of the filter sets (approximately 6" filters), it took 19 quarts, both times. I now have two quarts in my compartment for when and what ever.
