Our bedroom radio emits a low level hum out of the speakers when the volume is low. I know it is attributed to the converter when it is charging.

Has anyone ever addressed this, or do you just live with it?

Im sure a filter is available out there, and curious what configuration is being used.

Happy Miles

Sam - ours does not hum and I would not suspect the charger since any ripple (or AC component) would be (or should be) filtered out by the battery bank.

Maybe try to add some filtering at the 12V supply for the radio? You also could try run the radio directly from a small 12V battery or from a good 12V power supply (like an Astron) to see if you get the same hum.

John -

Thanks for the speedy reply.

It is definately 60hz - and might be inductive pickup at the radio which is mounted right above the charger compartment.

I notice it doesnt seem to be bad at 0530 when the alarm goes off and the 12v load has been minimal, however in the evening when the lights have been on, etc... it is more noticeable.

I have a few Gel cells around and a little 3A regulated supply I could try.

When we built tube rigs years ago we used a Humbucker - or faraday shield to reduce interstage coupling. I know it is a little extreme to go through that.

If the hum is still there on a separate supply or 12v gel cell, it will point to inductive coupling off the charger transformer.

I appreciate your input (no pun) a lot!

73,

Sam

I figured someone by now would have interjected that it Hums because it doesn't know the WORDS!

Tough audience here.

A simple trick might be to twist the positive and negative wires if possible to eliminate inductive signal. This idea works in many situations.
