Basement A/C FAILED. BAD Condenser.
07 Vectra 40TD. Basement a/c Coleman 6538-871 two ton heat pump unit
failed. Dropped out by competent RV Specialists. Autopsy: No freon in system. Both Compressors shot. Water in condenser compartment. Worst of all condenser appears pretty well corroded. Condenser replacements are no longer available. Condenser side blower inop.
No direct replacement for entire unit available. (Thank you Coleman/Airxcel). Just compressors are $700 each.
Possible 46515-818 RV Two ton AC Heat Pump is not a direct replacement.
Form factor is smaller. Would require external reducting.
No junkyard units available (Colaws).
Consider: Drive Ohio to Texas w/no ac and possibly have two Dometic 15000 btu slim lines roof installed.
Anyone else have any other ideas, suggestions or positive comments.
We are full timers. We are not having fun.
Thank you.

I feel your pain as we own a 2007 Tour 40TD and know we'll be in the same AC dilemma one day...
Have you considered one of those stand alone house AC units that just have an outside vent? May be a temp fix until you find a permanent solution.
Good luck!

"temp fix". Good one!!!!
Well be shopping this afternoon for a window air. not sure how I will hold it in.
Any ideas invited. We may have a strange lead on a direct replacement out of the factory. Has no numbers we have every heard of.
Else it may be off to Texas to have two roof units installed and new compartment added.

-->>RVThere: Just make sure your A/C drains are open. If its on there should be water coming out. I believe ours were filled/plugged with pollen over winter in Gulfport. Yellow sticky stuff.

Not sure if he can help, but I use Steve Shelburne in Ringgold GA to service my basement air unit. He actually enjoys working on them. The condenser issue may be fatal if you can't source a replacement tho'.
You can reach Steve at 423-290-8367

Paints a pretty grim picture for all of us with basement units.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but this particular issue is not limited to RV air conditioners.
The 20 year old AC in our house went out, there was no direct replacment for the air handler unit (heat pump outside, air handler in the garage), so they needed to change the ducting to make everything fit.
It sucks, but that's the way it turns out some days.

Replacing Basement AC with Rooftop Units?
We are going thru the same thing with our basement AC, different model number. We installed a roof top unit in a ceiling vent fan position about 4 years ago to provide some backup capacity. That is saving our bacon right now but it is LOUD. Been looking for a salvage unit of same model as basement unit but no luck so far.
Spoke with Winnebago today and they said they can install 2 14,800 BTU roof top units connected to our duct work and operating off a single thermostat for $6K (ouch!). Anybody out there had this done? Would love to hear what your experience has been regarding performance and noise.

I replaced my basement unit last year with a direct replacement. You may have this covered, but be sure YOU personally check with Airxcel in Wichita KS to hear it from them yourself. I had to contact them myself via email to get the correct info. They told me my original 6535A871 replacement is 46515-811. My local dealer wanted $2,999 for a new unit. I ordered from DyersRVOnline.com and got it for $2,280 full price, free shipping to my door. I installed it myself. The new 46515-811 was a perfect fit. The computer board is slightly different but they confirmed correct connection when I called.

I came across that number yesterday. If you google it, you'll find it in stock on many web sites. The Dyers deals sounds like a good one if they'll pay shipping! BTW, the correct link for Dyers is www.dyersonline.com

Hello SF,
Traveling from Denver to FL last couple of weeks, basement air quit with 102 degrees. Diagnosed as condenser motor and later found to be a broken wire. Thermo King is the authorized dealer for Coleman and they are not cheap. But if you have pets and spouses that can overheat-any port in a storm. I posted a text last week for the good job they did.
If you have the time to shop around, good deals are out there. But if time is critical, Thermo King could be the answer.
Phil

After a failure a couple of years ago I installed an Advent 13,500 unit in place of the kitchen vent. It works great as a supplement and is pretty quiet even in the room with it. We use it on the road to save the basement unit and it does well. I lucked out because I had an unused 20 amp w/d circuit that I ran through the styrofoam to the duct and then to the unit. I tied into the ducts and have panels that I close to keep the cold air from going to the basement. Just be ready to have the inside of the coach look like a snow globe with all the styrofoam floating down...lol
Two of those would work well, the only problem being wiring. In the bedroom running the wiring on the surface would work or up through the roof and then to the unit.
Good luck,
Dave
