Basement Air a thing of the Past?

I read on another thread that Coleman is no longer building basement air condition units. As a result Winnebago has switched all production models to roof air beginning in 2011. I know the 42'er did that but I thought it was just to make room for the tag.

Anyone have the straight scoop?

To make room for the tag and the special tank that holds the emmisions liquid for the NEW engines to meet EPA regs.
If the demand is not there for whatever reason I imagine they will be history.

If things are they seem. Coleman basement air is out. I don't know for sure and I've called Winnebago and they have "intimated" the era of basement air is over.
I am seriously considering trading for a new 2010 40' Tour as apparently that ends it.
I love the basement air and live in Las Vegas, NV. That says it all.

Actually I was talking to RVP (makers of Colman-Mach) the other day about a control board and inquired about this very subject. To quote them---"A couple of basement models have been dropped, but they are currently producing and also developing new basement models to including the new required 410A freon". So the basement models will be around, they didn't say who would be using them.

Having just retired from the A/C & heating business, I can tell you there are good alternatives that will eventually find their way into RV's. For instance the Mitsubishi ductless splits. They are so quiet you are hard pressed to hear them. They run up to SEER 20 or so for efficiency. Both the compressor and the evaporator fans are ECM controlled (variable speed hi-e). Mits and others are nice stuff and hopefully we'll see it come to our RV's. They can run them as heat pumps down to -15 or so as well.

I can tell you, today I looked on the roof of a 2011 Winnebago Adventurer 32H and it DID have roof air conditioners.

This sounds interesting. What models do you see being compatible with motor homes?

I don't know how popular the basement A/Cs are but I am not a big fan. I find the vibration and noise a little too much to ignore at night when trying to sleep. I prefer roof top with ducting. I am fimilar with the Mitsubishi's and they are a nice piece of work. You can get just about any BTU and the only thing needed inside is the evaporator with the fan inside. They are about the size of a short plasma TV. All they need to operate is the coolant lines and electrical power. No ducting required. My guess is that the RV industry can't get them as cheap as the junk they put into our MH now so don't be expecting to see one anytime soon.

before I retired as a building inspector, the split/ductless unit was being used where computer cabinets and "head end" rooms. At that time the most popular unit was Sanyo. (although Mitsubishi is just as good). The electrical contractors couldn't get enough of them.
I can honestly say they (split units) are the best thing to hit the a/c world. If I was younger, they would be in my stick home.
Without any stretch of the imagination, they could be EASILY adapted to MH's. They operate with a remote control just like your tv. We're really missing the boat!!!
