Have a 1999 Winnebago Adventurer 34V Diesel Pusher purchased used and have no idea of what the age of the chassis batteries are. I've really not had a problem until a few days ago. I normally put the slide out with the engine running to utilize the alternator, however I had a few things I needed to work on at home so I exercised the slide a couple of times. The slide really zapped the batteries so I had to bring them back up with a charger. The batteries are clearly marked Gel. What I noticed on the slide out battery tray was the notation that the batteries must be disconnected prior to charging, which I complied with. My question is now that the batteries are charged can I attach a small battery maintainer without disconnecting the batteries to be used when the MH is parked. Originally I thought I was being charged while being plugged into the shoreline, but after reviewing several posts I don't think the 99-2000 Adventurer charges anything but the house batteries. I'm a believer in the small battery tenders and would like to have one in place if it's possible without the disconnect proceedure, can I make it work?

I am by no means a RV tech person, I'm just offering a common sense approach which may bring on more ideas from the membership.

First off, I would contact Winnebago to see why they require the engine batteries to be disconnected before charging.
2nd - If you have to continue doing this I would look at installing a bayonet type switch or some type of switching device to make it easier to disconnect the continuity without physically disconnecting the batteries.

My 2002 DP also will not maintain the chassis batteries when connected to shore power....Winnebago added the trickle charger for the chassis batteries in later model years.

I use a Battery Minder on my chassis batts and do not disconnect the batteries. However, you could add a battery disconnect switch as already suggested.

It is no problem to add the battery maintainer. The advice to disconnect before charging is a safety precaution more than any thing. There is potential to damage engine computers and etc. depending on the quality and type of charger.

Thanks all, the Tender will be hardwired tomorrow. I was able to bring the batteries back to 14.5 with the tender clipped on.

I love this forum, I only have about 1,000 more questions, Thanks again
