Better Location for Coach Water Pump

My SHURFlo water pump failed on my coach (2003 Journey DL). I've only had the coach a little over a month. The pump has a date code of 4/2009 so it wasn't original. (I have a replacement on the way) The pump failed on a trip and during troubleshooting I noticed the pump was hot. In fact the entire compartment was hot. The pump is located in the rear most drivers side compartment. The Journey is a rear radiator 330 Cat. The engine was running normal temp at the time considering the 100+ outside temperature.

I was thinking of relocating the pump to prevent a future failure due to heat. My initial thought was to locate it in the compartment right behind the rear wheels.

I had a few questions:

- Does anyone else, with a similar located pump, have issues with their pumps running hot while driving?
- Where is the pump located in newer coaches?

My other concern is that my inverter is also located in the same compartment. That will be much more difficult to relocate. I'll save that for a different thread.

That compartment is pretty warm, but that's not what caused the pump to fail. The original 5.7 was a great pump, but there have been problems with the newer ones. If you really want to move some more air thru the compartment, you could put a fan behind your breaker panels that would move some coach air into the area.

A properly functioning pump in that compartment will only be warm to the touch, even after driving on the hottest day.

Just Wondering How much time is the pump running while the engine is running? On my unit all the water stuff is centrally located for heating purposes.

My pump is located in 2nd compartment on passenger side. Never gets warm in that compartment. No problems with pump but I did have to install pump shock absorbers (coiled hoses) to eliminate pump vibration noise.

I seriously doubt the location is the problem. The pump has a tendency to not totally shut off, which then causes it to overheat. Then the thermal shut-down feature turns it off. Normally, after it cools, it will run again. Sometimes the shut-off trigger point needs to be adjusted by turning the screw in the center of the head ...higher clockwise, lower counter-clockwise. I just installed the 5th warranty replacement 5.7 pump in my coach ...the first one was installed in Feb 2005. Some have lasted as much as two years, some as little as two months. One of mine would not shut off regardless of adjustment, one would not run at all, the others sprung leaks around the pump body. I carry a small back-up pump, and have enough experience that I can swap them out in just a few minutes!
