saw there was discussion of a new EMC Flash Update for CAT engines # 2725312-00. So I called CAT and was told there is an even newer update for EMC Flash #2952321-00. I called my local CAT repair shop (Quinn) and they told me just to drive it in and they would update the Flash while I wait. So I took it in today and with 45 min I was in and out and best of all no charge. I was told the update is to improve engine burning and lessen immessions and black smoke problems. Hopefully better gas mileage also.

Am having my Cat C-7 330HP reflashed in couple days so called Cat Tech Line to verify program #. Was told the latest reflash for 330HP is 2725313 and that 2952321 is for the 350HP. I sure hope all the techs and the shops have their priorities right and do the right reflash. I don't know what would happen if they used the 350HP reflash on a 330 HP engine. Some of the other goofs I'v heard of the shops making is kind of scary when you don't have any specific way to double check their work. Well, guess I'll keep my fingers crossed. I'm sure if it doesnt' work right they'll say just bring it back, as if that's all we have to do is just run back and forth several hundred miles each time.

If your engine is not performing as it should or is having some kind of problems the Cat dealer can hook up his computer (?) and change the parameters of the ECM to change how the engine receives its fuel and air. This is supposed to correct the problems, or at least the way I understand the situation, am fairly new to the diesel field.

Hi All,
Here is information I have obtained on software versions that apply to the CAT C7 350 HP engine as used in newer, Freightliner chassis, Winnebago and Itasca coaches. This is not to imply that this software is for every C7 engine so check with CAT to be sure it is for your serial numbered engine. If you can find someone with a ˜CAT Pocket Tech' they can read out the data from the ECM to get your engine's serial number. It may also be that newer software versions are available for the CAT 3126 engines on earlier models that would correct some of these issues.

Our coach left the factory with 2487630 software. It ran great but we had the delay on acceleration problem that seemed to be inherent with the C7 (and 3126). Step on the accelerator and count - one...two...three...etc. - until the power would kick in. This effect is worse at altitude. Sea level is around one second increasing to 4 or 5 seconds at 8000 feet. Annoying at best, dangerous at worst. For some reason, on occasion, this delay would stretch out to 10 to 15 seconds and you'd feel like it was leaving you stranded in an intersection.

We had the ECM re-flashed in Apr. 04 under warranty with version 2517445 software in an attempt to correct these issues. No luck!

Just has a re-flash done under warranty with version 2725312 software and this time I think they got it right. At our altitude of over 5000 feet, there appears to be no delay at all. Power comes on smoothly from the start and increases as you accelerate. Of course, you don't get 350 HP at idle and you still get the surge of power at around 2000 RPM as the boost peaks out at 25 inches, but it's no longer a dead horse pulling away from a light! Drivability is now as it should be.

Don't know about any other parameters like fuel economy but I'll know soon since we leave on an estimated 8000 mile trip tomorrow. I'll report back when I have the numbers.

If you are experiencing these acceleration problems, I would encourage you to contact a CAT dealer and officially complain. This seems to be the way to get warranty work done as opposed to paying $100.00 to ˜just have the ECM re-flashed for no reason˜.

Thank you Mr. "T"

Armed with your post, I took my rig to the local Freightliner Service Center and had them check out my EMC. I too, qualified for the 2725321 upgrade...and, it works. No longer a slug from a stop light, now I feel I can safely navigate a busy cross street or on-ramp. Not a rocket ship but MUCH better.
