My chassis battery died after 6 years – not bad for an OEM battery. Before I replace it, is there anything that I need to know before doing so, i.e., re-setting of dash gauges or anything else that would need to be reset

I believe that when you change the Chassis batter out you will set everything to zero except the odometer reading. Laws dictate that the ODO is a static setting,
If you have a lot of settings that you wish to keep, and your house batteries are close to your Chassis battery, check with some good qualified mechanics and ask if you could use jumper cables to connect the two just before disconnecting the chassis battery. That would maintain voltage for all the settings. (Just a thought.)

Most shops that do battery replacements have a battery powered device they plug into the cigarette lighter/12 volt power point to maintain voltage in the system and retain all your computer settings.

Funny you should ask this question. I just did a replacement of my chassis battery a few days ago. In the process I was on shore power and pulled the battery out for a day while I went to the auto store to purchase a new one. When I put the new one in I checked my settings and everything seemed OK except the clock on the dash radio (needed to be reset to the correct time). Radio presets were still in place, dash things were OK, so no problems. Good luck with your change over.

If you wish to keep your settings you have basically two choices.. Depending on if you have a 12 volt outlet that is a "Chassis" feature and always live
If you have such an outlet (the 12 volt outlet in my DASH is a Chassis device, the other 12 volt outlets in my rig are "House" devices) you can get a 12 volt plug with a 9-volt retangular battery connection at any auto parts place.. Snap a battery on, plug it in and it will provide enough voltage to maintain settings, including radio memory, dash and such.
Or... Locate your 12 volt Battery taps.. (Or any handy spot on the 12 volt line save for the battery cables themselves)
Clamp on with one of those handy luggable 12 volt JUMP start packs you can get at any auto parts place. Now change out your battery
REMEMBER THE POSITIVE CABLE IS HOT SO MAKE SURE THE WRENCH DOES NOT SHORT TO THE CHASSIS AND PROTECT THE CABLE WHILE LOOSE (Tape over the lug I like painters tape, easy to remove)
and that about covers it.
Oh, you might find that luggable battery handy for jump starting your towed when needed.
You can also hook up jumper cables to the towed
Several companies sell a much smaller battery with a lighter cord attached and a lighter socket... That will work if you have the lighter as chassis device option.
And there is one that uses "D" cells to re-charge a dead car battery too.
(I bulit my own on that one)
Many options.
