Hi Gang. I have a issue with my 8kw Diesel generator it will start and run for a minute then stop. It gives a failure code of 36 which I think means it, lost it's prime. The manual says to hold the start button down for a minute or so to prime then push start. I did this and the same thing happens, wants to run but then stops. Any ideas?

Make, Model and historical information on this problem will help others help you.

In the meantime, make sure your chassis fuel tank(s) aren't below anywhere from 1/4-3/8 remaining.

Not sure of code, but also check your oil level, it will shut down with low oil.

It will also fail to run if you don't have enough fuel in your tank. This prevents you from using all your driving fuel and stranding yourself while running your genset.

Mike, you can download a pretty good troubleshooting document at Generator & RV Controls | Engine Monitors | Idle Limiter | Repair & Rebuilding Services

The document emphasizes control boards, but provides a good troubleshooting procedure.

Thanks guys for the quick replies. Just for your information my Gen-set is a Onan Quiet 8000 Diesel, model is 8HDKAK11451K. So today I held the prim switch down for about 3 minutes, then started the Gen. It ran for about 2 minutes and died. So Gin I held the primer down for about 5 minute and then tried it again and it started and ran fine, even under load. I will try and start it tomorrow with out priming first.

I believe it is the "stop" switch you hold down to prime the diesel generator. It also may take longer than a minute to get the air out of the fuel lines.

Glad it turned out to be a simple fix.
