We are trying to find out if anyone out there has a Toyota FJ Crusier and is dinging towing (flat towing) it. Toyota says they do not want this vehicle towed, but we believe we have seen people towing them. We felt that as long as it has a neutral position in transfer case it was ok. Thanks Richard & Susie

Ask Toyota why they recommend against towing.
Ask the folks towing them as to how and why.
Don't just assume that putting the transfer case in nuetral will make everythingOK, might be something you aren't considering, like maybe a gearbox oil pump.

I agree with 'gunny'. I've seen plenty of vehicles being towed with all four down, and the manufacturer doesn't recomend it. Mechanical problems will show up sooner or later, and the repair bill to go with it.
I personally would go by what the manufacturer does, or doesn't, recommend... they built it, so they probably know something I don't...

If your vehicle is the 2007 FJ it is not listed in the 2007 Dinghy Towing Guide. In fact, no Toyota Pickup or SUV is listed as towable.
Go with the manufacturers' recommendations. It will save you money in the long run.

I asked at dealer and answer from him was no. We like the looks,but are looking at the 4-door wrangler now. BTW have seen 2 fj's on trailers behind MH's, so thats 1 alternitive

Akasusie,You may want to check the Remco disconnect system. I have it on my 99 Ford Explorer Automatic 2WD. and it works great. I tow all for wheels down with the drive shaft disconnected from the rear end.
Easy to connect & disconnect when traveling.

OK so Toyota said no.
Why?
An inquiring mind wants to know. Is it an issue with lubrication?
Sorry, I'm not one to accept a no we don't recommend it answer.

My friend has been towing his FJ for the past 6 months. He is using the Remco Drive shaft disconnect.

07 FJ STICKS CAN BE TOWED DINGHY STYLE AUTOS WILL NEED A SHAFT DISCONNECT I HAVE 04 4RNR AUTO HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEM

Thanks for all the input on flat towing, we have ordered a Nissan Xterra with a manuel trans,as this is towable,we are getting rid of an 06 Jeep Rubicon if anyone is interested, I'm just to old to get in and out of back seat. Susie

The reason why Toyota, Honda and other manufacturers say 'no' to all 4 wheels on the ground is, they don't know the possible problems. Therefore they will NOT cover your warranty on a Toyota FJ. We went through extensive investigation on what vehicles can and cannot be towed and spoke with a couple friends who work for Toyota and Honda corporate. Due to not testing whether there would/would not be problems with towing, they have taken the safe route and made a decision that it is a 'no'.
Akasusie, your idea of going with the Xterra makes sense as we went with the Frontier manual trans. We wanted to have a pickup as we had one prior to our RV and it suits our needs.

Hate to argue 03 corvette but NO toyota Truck or SUV on a truck platform should be dinghy towed witout a driveline disconnect. The mainshaft in a toyota manual trans has no oil supply without the countershaft spinning!! Seen it and it gets really ugly inside.
