Our exhaust takes a 12 inch tip but when trying to get the old one off we discovered the main pipe is rusted thru. Can DH put an 18 inch on as he will only have to cut the main pipe back about 3 inches? I expect a new pipe the whole way back is pricy.

I dont see why not... You can cut as far back as you need to and have pipe for..

That's what I did when our pipe rusted through and we lost the chrome extension. I bought the next larger size extension and then cut back the exhaust pipe until it was solid. Its worked well for over 15K miles.

I did the same on a Journey we had, getting off the old tip can be a pain. I used a dremel tool to saw it off. You would think that they wouldn't go bad so soon.

Ditto here! Cut off the pipe until it was solid and bought an longer extension. Still holding on.

Update. We didn't have to use a longer extension. there was about 3 inches insiide the original tip. Cut the the tip off, the rust was inside. The new 12 inch tip only accepted about 2 inch of pipe so it was still far enought from the rig to do the job. Next sz 18 would have been too long.
