Last winter we noticed the wire closet shelf/clothes hanger rack was bent and sagging. My solution was an adjustable metal shower/closet rod. It seemed like a good fix. Well, two days ago I noticed the whole thing sagging again. One end of the rack was bent a lot and a weld was broken on the rack. The adjustable metal rod had given way ...I found the metal rod had a plastic screw mechanism inside that had buckled and snapped. Today I bought a new wire closet shelf/clothes hangar rack identical to the original at a Menard's in IL. We needed 49", so had to buy a 6 ft and cut it down to 49" rather than being able to buy and use the 4 ft one. The 6 ft rack came with 3 braces designed to go from the rack down to the back wall ...our original setup from Winnebago had NOT ONE brace from the rack down to the back wall. When I installed the new wire shelf, I used all three support braces so the shelf now has support every 12" of it's 4 ft length. We had already bought two more of the adjustable shower/closet rods, so I put them in place too for added support. The wire shelf cost was $17.02l. The adjustable rods were $13.16 total for both. I suspect if the intended support braces had been in place from the factory, we would no have had a problem. You might check your closet if you have the wire type "wardrobe shelf" for hanging your clothes.

In our large closet we don't have a wire shelf and hanger rod - just a ribbed plastic-covered wooden rod. Before we went bouncing down the road I placed a support between the middle of the rod and the floor. I could see that problem waiting to happen.
BTW, I have one-third of the closet space, wife haas the rest.

Paul - I could anticipate what was going to happen with our wire rack and I added a brace to the middle of it several months ago. The other part of the closet has a traditional wooden dowel clothes rod and it is fine.
