Reporting back in on this issue. We tried mis3s's suggestion of putting all jacks on the ground manually and then pressing auto. Unfortunately, it didn't work. It sounded like such a great idea!

We were lucky and were able to level in one shot, with the left front tire less than an inch off the ground. That's good enough for us.
