Fuel Gauge

I have only filled the fuel tank on my "new to me" 04 Journey a couple of times, and I have taken the time to overcome the poor venting to get it full.

I have filled it when the gauge got down to about the yellow "reserve" indicator and it takes only about 65 or 70 gallons. Does this seem about right? Are there 20 gallons or so remaining?

How far do others let their tanks go down before refilling? And at that point, how many gallons do they put in if they take their time? I have the CAT 330 and it's a 39W, but with the F/L chassis, all models have the same 90 gallon listed capacity.

Thank you.

I don't know the exacts but it would be nice if manufacturers quoted USEABLE fuel as opposed to CAPACITY. Per federal law they must allow some area at the top to deal with fuel expansion. OTOH, I doubt that anyone would like the tube sucking fuel to the engine to be sucking from the bottom of the thank.

At the Spartan factory we discussed this but didn't get a definitive answer to that question regarding our 150 gallon tanks. Anecdotally I'm guessing 2 things. The first is that I have about 140 usable gallons. The second is that the fuel gauge seems somewhat "calibrated" to that same amount. These are rough guesses since I haven't pushed my fuel to the point of the generator shutting off yet but my biggest fill up was 112 gal with the gauge saying I had between 1/4 & 1/3 tank and the genny was still running.

I usually fill up when the gauge shows half empty. Takes about 45 to 50 gallons to fill the 90 gallon tank. My gauge is fairly accurate.

I just filled my tank. The info center was cautioning me that I had 23% left but I only needed 60.6 gals. I really had 33% remaining (90 gal tank). The needle had not reached the yellow part of the gauge.

Also anytime I get below 1/4 tank the generator loses it's prime and is cranky to start after I fill it so I generally fill the tank before the generator suction tube is uncovered.

On my 2001 Journey 36LD when the yellow fuel light came on it took 75gal to fill tank. Book says I have a 90 gal fuel tank. Most of the time I refuel between 1/3 to 1/4 around 60 to 65 gal. Randy
