I've considered building my own genturi system for my MH. My Brave has the generator exhaust on the passenger side (what were they thinking?) near the back of the motor home.

I would really like to get the exhaust away from the main sitting area of the coach, and the genturi seems to be the ticket to doing it, however, I would like to make it a permanent mount.

My idea would be to extend the exhaust pipe of the genset to near the rear bumper (4-6 feet) and make a 90 degree turn to point to the sky. Then construct a genturi style up pipe to take the exhaust gasses away. Electrical conduit mounts/pipe mounts, isolated with rubber pads would be used to permanently hold the genturi clone to the coach. I suspect I'd have to drill a small hole in the exhaust pipe to let water out, and I'd want to have the pipe above the roof line.

Anyone see any issues with this?

How about just running the exhaust up the back of the coach? I'd have to come up with a double walled pipe to make sure people don't get burned. A tractor style rain cap would be required for this setup...

There may be back pressure problems adding pipes, especially with bends. that is the main design concept of the genturi.

When I am dry camping at the NASCAR races I used to use a piece of stainless steel flex pipe, 2", that slide over the generator tail pipe. This hooked on by a spring to the gen. I had it in 2 sections with, believe it or not, a shop vac tube cut down as a coupling. I would have 8 feet of extension, or, with the added piece, a 16 foot extension. With the flex pipe I could direct the exhaust anywhere I needed to. I had absolutely no problem with exhaust heat or back pressure. Sometimes I would leave the gen. running for 3-4 hours with no problems.
I now use the factory store bought exhaust extension that extends above the roof, when needed.

Good luck,

As someone said, the main issue with extending the exhaust is back pressure, use of a larger pipe will reduce this.. If you decide to go up the back (Which by the way I think is an excellent idea) consider the exhaust on a motor cycle.

I'd extend the pipe, up-sizing to reduce back pressure, then when you get to the back use a dual wall system.. The inner pipe is basically your exhaust and an outer shield, extend the shield down to include the sweep elbow (But make sure it does not touch the actual pipe)

One concern I do have is if you have a no-wind rain (If it's windy there will not be a problem) you have an open pipe that could, in theory, fill with water.. I do not think this will be an issue, but... Think =not= know.

If it's windy the rain will hit the side of the larger pipe and drip harmlessely on the ground... or rahter normally as it should.

Use of a cover.. NOT recommended.

My plan would be to use a double walled pipe up the back of the coach. The tractor style flappy cover wouldn't add much if any back pressure, and would prevent water from entering the pipe when it was raining. Naturally, I would increase the diameter of the pipe from the muffler to the top of the pipe.

I'm thinking I may give it a try. At the worst, if things don't work out, I'd have to cut the pipe and install a genturi clone...

I think we focus way to much on the back pressure developed by the pipe we'd like to add. The generators we use have low compression, I suspect little overlap on the cams and I suspect the mufflers develop significant back pressure. I know I can feel the exhaust pulses from my genset as much as 6 feet away...and its all stock.

That's not to say that more back pressure isn't something we should concern ourselves with...
