Are heat pumps incorporated into rooftop AC effective? Since heat rises, we wonder if they really work to heat the motor home. As with our previous post, we're trying to decide about options for a new motor home. We'd love to hear from those of you with experience.

I love the heat pump in my rig. We use it exclusively for heat until it gets below about 40 degrees outside. Financially, it is much cheaper way to heat the rig than either an electric space heater or the propane furnace.

As stated the roof top heat pumps work rather well for providing heat down to the temps as described. The only downer is that they are fairly noisy as compared to the furnace. Obviously they are as noisy as when cooling th rig since the same unit is used in either case!

I love my heat pump (it's a basement unit) and don't need the gas furnace unless it's really cold or I'm dry camping.

One thing tho..... since it heat is coming from the ceiling and not the floor, while it's running you feel a lot more heat around your head when standing. And conversely, you feel a lot more cold around your feet if your coach is cold to start with. Once the inside temps have stabilized, you'll be as cozy as any stick house.

I like it cool at night for sleeping (60-65) and then set the heat pump to come on around 30 minutes before I get up. By then the ceiling/floor temps are close to the same.

Off Topic: I replaced my Coleman Mach thermostat with a RiteTemp digital setback unit for about $70 .... that was 4 yrs ago. If you search this forum for RiteTemp you'll find pictures and wiring instructions.

Happy Travels,
Bill
