Help dead circuit? On the road.

Friends,

On my Itasca 33c, I have 3 dead outlets including the microwave. Last time this happened a member suggested I check the gfi on the Xantrex pro power unit in my basement bay. Last time that solved it! Now I have checked it and it does not reset nor can I find any tripped breakers. Any advise is appreciated.

Dave

Have you checked other GFI outlets in the RV? Look up your Xantrex model online to find a manual that might give more help. If the outlets that are dead are usually powered through the Xantrex unit, it might need checking. If it's an inverter, it should provide 120v power from your batteries when not hooked up to shore power, and switch to shore power or generator when they provide the 120v.

Don't have your specific unit or your wiring diagram handy, but I would check for other GFIs- maybe at the outside outlet, or other places near water faucets- ie bathroom or kitchen. Good luck.

If the inverter is not making electricity the GFCI will not reset.

There should be a circuit breaker on the inverter that may have tripped.

There should also be a large ( 250 amp ? ) fuse in the large positive cable, near the batteries. Check to see if that is blown.

You said the GFI does not reset. If it is tripped and does not reset, there is a leak to ground somewhere in the protected circuit. Unplug everything on that circuit and try to reset the GFI. If it still does not reset, you need to be checking the wiring. If it resets, plug each item that was on the circuit back in, one at a time. The one that trips the GFI is the one you need to work on or replace.

Just my two cents worth. It is worth what you paid for it.

Ours did that a couple times and both times it was an outdoor outlet that got wet. Unplugged outdoor lights from outlet and it was good again. Another idea is just like computers. Turn off the campground at the electrical pedestal and wait a minute and turn it back on. Sometimes the system fixes itself on a reboot.

If your Winnebago Serial Number begins with 70D69T1 here is the Body, 110 Volt Wiring Installation/Diagram for your coach.

If your Winnebago Serial Number begins with 70D69T2 here is the Body, 110 Volt Wiring Installation/Diagram for your coach.

In either case the Microwave is on a dedicated 15A circuit. In the T2 case that circuit is powered by the inverter.

So, we move to a new CG near Dallas, plugged in and everything worked as designed. Big mystery to me, but I'm happy. I'm going to try calling the manufacturer just in case they have any ideas.

Thanks for all the help.

Have you checked your serial number to determine which wiring diagram matches yours? If the microwave outlet is powered by an inverter, disconnecting shore cord while relocating to Dallas might have reset the inverter. I'd take time to download the manual for your inverter and see if it has a hidden circuit breaker or if it auto resets. The inverter should switch to shore power or generator when 120v is present, saving your batteries. It could be an issue with the internal transfer switch function of the inverter.

I personally don't like mysteries of an electrical nature, they can develop into real problems or a lack of power when you want it.

Dave1956, more than likely you had either a bad pedestal or a bad connection at the pedestal. The inverter and the microwave are fed from the same leg of incoming power. Note: A GFI will not reset if there is not 120VAC available to it. There were probably more recept's dead you just didn't notice them. The microwave is not fed by the inverter, it is only a 1000 watt unit.

Usually you have a fuse in between the house batteries and the inverter.

We have that blow on our unit and it reacted similar to your problem.

I will post a picture.

Easy way to check put a jumper cable on each stud to bypass the fuse and see if problem goes away.
