One of my projects this winter is to replace the big box TV in the bedroom. The front is done already. Just wondering if anyone has replaced it in their Journey. Any suggetions and or what model and size did you replace it with. Currently is has the standard 20 inch unit. I was even thinking of maybe removing the wood trim permanently and just get a larger TV that would fill the opening without the trim. I will be looking at some black friday sales to find a good deal.

Thoughts

Bob

majfrizz,

Here is what I did with our Meridian: Rear HD Upgrade - a set on Flickr

It was a lot easier than the front: Front HD Upgrade - a set on Flickr

We wanted to go bigger in the bedroom, but that would have required "surgery" to the wall, and I didn't want to tackle that.

Hi Bob,

I wish I could tell you but we are still using the original tube type in the BR. I had to add a converter box and the wife isn’t too happy about having to change cables back an forth to watch the women’s basket ball games but I went with the cheapest solution. I sure wish I could have gotten a box with antenna feed through but at the time this was the only box I could get with the coupon. Good luck and let us all know what you discover.

THutch, How did you finish the back side of the TV where the plastic tub used to be? Also what type of wood and stain did you use for the new frame?

Thanks, Sammie

Sammie,

You cannot see it in the photos, but I reused the plastic tub. It is not attached to the faceframe, and does not need to be.

As for wood, I believe I used the poplar from Lowes. It was the white wood, upgrade from pine, but not the oak. I was looking for similar grain, and oak seemed too grainy. Stain was my own mix. Got two close colors and mixed to get it close, but I'm not real happy with it. I'm going to order some from Winnie and restain - probably this winter. I'll also get the surround sound to work.

The installation has proved to be good...no rattles, and it is as solid as can be.

TV's are so cheap now, wife is wanting a bigger one in the bedroom! I may end up doing some wall surgery. It wouldn't take much to make the cavity bigger, and the trim would be easy - once I have the correct stain.

great job, my TV is in the corner cabinet above the dresser at an angle. I know, bigger is better, so i am really thinking about removing the 3 plus inches of wood trim all around and see how big i can put in there. probbaly no more than a 26 inch depending where the speakers are on it.
