Journey Map Light Dimmer?

On my 03 Journey DL, the instrument panel dimmer is located on the upper left corner of the instrument cluster (later versions have the "smart wheel" sensor in that location). The map light over the drivers seat is controlled by the headlamp switch. That switch has been "glitchy" since my MH was new.

My question is, "Is the map light supposed to dim, or does the rheostat on the headlamp switch serve only to turn the map light on or off"?

Thanks in advance for your responses. I am on the road and may take a day or two to get back to this forum.

Ditto on my Vectra. Think of it more as in a car, with a dimmer for the dash and a dome light on/off all in one switch. The panel dims but the map light is just on/off.
