Journey vs Itasca towing

I was checking the chassis specs for older winnebago DPs (back to 2005)and I found that the Journey has 5000lb rated towing hitches and the Itasca has 10000 lb rated hitch. I wonder why they did this?

My 05 Journey 39K GCWR is 10,000 over GVWR and has the hitch to match. Perhaps there were options at the time of ordering, or the shorter chassis journeys were rated lower. In either case you would think the Itasca counterparts would be the same, wouldn't you.

Any of the models that had the cumins ISB engine/5sp. allison were rated at 5000#
All that had the Cat. engine allison 3000 were rated 10,000#

The Journeys were rated for either 5,000# or 10,000# by transmission. 5,000# for 5 speed and 10,000# for 6 speed.

I noticed that all the Itasca models looked like they wrer priemium models of the Winnebago line of motor homes. When you look at the brochures for the two different lines, all models of the Itasca's have some of the optional items for Winnebago's. No Itasca for 2005 has the 2500 transmission where the 32' Winnebago does with it as an option. Just one example.

RCtime is correct. CAT vs. Cummins engine will determine which tow rating you have. CAT= 10K lbs, Cummins = 5K lbs tow rating.

Uh, maybe, but our '02 Journey DL 36 has the CAT 330 motor / six speed Allison and a 5,000 lb hitch. Where can I get a 10k hitch to replace the 5k?

Who made the chassis? They should be able to tell you
We have a Spartan chassis under our DSDP, it has a 6,000# hitch, Spartan says all I need to do is change to a 10,000# hitch and naturally I could buy it from them, but I'm not sure that's the cheapest way to go. Besides, 6,000#'s is adequate for us as the Ody only weighs 4,400 or maybe a little more.

Our 2004 Vectra has a 350 Cummins and a 10k lb hitch and it was standard equipment, I guess they put 10s on some and 5s on others depending on the inventory at the factory maybe who knows?

Our 2003 Itasca Horizon 32' (same as Journey 32') had a Cummins 300, a Allison 3000 tranny, and a 10k hitch rating.

I believe the transmission had more to do with it, than the engine (CAT or Cummins). My current coach has the Allison 2500, and only a 5k rated hitch. More than enough for our little Jeep Wrangler though.
