Newbie Questions

Hello Everyone,

I'm considering buying a used Winnebago/Itasca diesel pusher, in either 40FD or 40AD configuration (because of the living room TV placement). I would love some answers from experienced owners for four questions:

1 - Suspension: I've noticed some come with front/rear NeWay air suspension, while others have the NeWay air suspension in the rear and the optional ZF-IFS air suspension in the front. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two, and if your opinion is that the latter is worth paying more for the coach?

2 - Radiator: I've noticed some come with rear radiators, while others are on the side. I would think the side would be better, right?

3 - Engine Braking: I've noticed some list and "exhaust" brake, while others list an "engine compression" brake. Can you explain the difference between the two, and tell me if one is better than the other?

4 - Fireplace: Some of these come with an electric fireplace and others do not. If I bought one without, would adding one be very costly or even possible to do?

Thank you in advance for your replies!

Some claim the IFS (independent front suspension vs a fixed axle) gives a better ride. At one time, the higher end Vectra's and Horizon's on the Freightliner Evolution chassis had IFS. IMO, not a deal breaker.

Exhaust brake (PAC brake is commonly used) is found on the small diesel engines like my CAT 330. It is primarily an air-operated flap or valve mounted in the exhaust line that, when closed, creates back pressure and helps to slow the coach. The engine brake (commonly called Jake brake) is found on the larger Cummins engines and is a two stage brake that has a more significant impact on engine compression.

Side vs rear radiator; I would prefer side radiator since I like to do maintenance myself and side radiators give more access to the back of the engine. Most higher end coaches have side radiators. Rear radiators also suck up more dirt and grime from the engine and road and need cleaning more often.

Fireplace. I don't have one and personally would have no use for one so can't give you any ideas on that. Every electric fireplace I've seen looks fake and cheesy to me but that's just my preference.

A comment about the fireplace - our Tour came with one and I thought it looked a bit cheesy myself. And I thought maybe the space could be better utilized for storage. But I have completely changed my mind after a year of using the fireplace. It is a great heater! It draws the same power as a portable heater, but provides far more heat. This has been very helpful in saving us propane when we are plugged in. I don't care how it looks anymore - love it!
