Here's a question about Onan 5500 generator on my 2004 Adventurer. When I start it up it will run for about 10 minutes with or without a load and then shut down. Diagnostic code shows number 14-Overfrequency-take it to Onan Service Center. Fuel is over half full and oil checks nearly full, air filter looks clean. Hate to take it in for service if it is something easy to correct. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Hi Ho: Voltage and frequency are directly related to each other. What I would want to know is weather the sensor/shut-down control is bad or weather the generator is actually over voltage/frequency.

I'm assuming that you don't have a frequency counter, so just measure the voltage with a DVM (digital voltmeter). You might check with and without loads. This will tell you if the generator is nominally doing what it is supposted to.
