Overheated Light Fixture - One Place Ceiling Light

The light bulb in my One Place Light Fixture burned out. I couldn't pull the bulb out without removing the fixture - which is a pain. Once I got the fixture out, I found that the plastic near the bulb had started to melt and part of it was burned. I scrapped away the burned plastic and replaced the bulb which is a 10 watt halogen, so it is hot.

This light is conveniently located in the ceiling near the hallway into the bath area. It can be tempting to use it as a night light - although it is bright. In my opinion, I would only use this light to read the One Place panel and then turn it off. I am also going to look for an LED replacement bulb which will be quite a bit cooler.

I just looked through the Owner's Manual for the 2006 Journey, and I did not see anything limiting the use of that light - unless I missed it.

I thought that others may be interested in what I found.

Those halogen bulbs put out a lot of heat. If the bulb was originally installed too close to the metal inside or possibly even touching it the heat could then destroy the fixture.

Bob,
Yep, those ceiling lights, at least the round "puck" ones over the One Place and, the rest of the living room and kitchen in our rig, all use the same, 10 watt Halogen light bulbs. Well, this has been discussed just a few times here but, there are numerous LED bulbs that will fit right into that fixture. I ordered mine up from LED Lights, Bulbs & Accessories - SUPER BRIGHT LEDS and they are a wafer type bulb with what's known as SMD-LEDs on them.

Now, the one over the One place is a tad different fixture than the rest of them so, a little different LED is in that one for us. But, changing all of them made one serious difference in heat radiated from the ceiling, the amount of juice used and, the color of the light is a bit more subtle than the harsher 10 watt ones that were in there.

You can get G-4 based LEDs from multiple sources but, that's the one I use. I did the changeover to LEDs right off the bat 'cause we dry camp quite a bit and the low consumption of power from the LEDs sure helps with longevity staying power of the house batteries.

Scott,

Thanks for your reply. I will be checking into those LEDs. I lost my internet connection for a few days, so I'm just checking posts.

Bob,
You're certainly welcome Sir. As stated, there are numerous places of purchase for LEDs. Many get them directly from China and I think they're pretty happy but, the wait is long for them to get here. I prefer dealing with a local company but, that's just me. I think you'll be real happy with them once you start the change over.

I replaced mine last year with THIS one made by Starlights. It's way brighter than the Halogen lamp. I also bought a replacement fixture for ~$6 here at Quartzsite.

I've seen several fixtures now, and they have all been severely burnt/ melted. This LED upgrade is really a safety upgrade.
