Pre Charge Start UP Question

Good morning all from the chilly Florida Keys. Here it goes, after several years of owning gas driven motor homes I now find myself in the sea of the diesel world. I placed my unit in storage for the winter and as I read the manuels the indicate that after sitting several weeks without use you should pre-charge the engine with oil before starting. How can you do this without the engine starting? It will sometimes start before the glow plugs warm up.
