I'm going to change out the rear axle lube soon. Any of you who have done this on the XC...how much lube will I need?

22 pints. I did mine before I put it to bed for the winter.

The Freightliner Manual says 5.8 quarts. I changed mine last spring and it took 6 1/2 quarts to get up to the bottom of the plug. Maybe some differentials hold different amounts.

Wagonmaster:

Where did you find that in the FL manual? I looked in the 'specifications' area and it only describes the type of lubricants required, not the actual capacities.

In the second half of the Manual - Maintenance Section. Page 35 "Rear Axle". Assuming we both have the same manual. Hope this helps.

From what I can gather, from 2004 on Freightliner changed to an Alliance differential and that capacity is 5.8 qts as wagonmaster2 stated. My 02 Horizon 39QD has a Meritor differential and it took 22 pints of 80/90 weight gear oil to fill. I read where some with different years have put up to 33 pints in theirs. Since you have an 02 I would guess that it is the same as mine.

Hey 3Huskies - That's good information. I never looked for a tag on mine to determine which differential it was but always wondered which one I had. As big as it looks laying on the ground underneith the coach, I can't imagine what one would look like the held 11 quarts where mine only holds about 6 quarts. That's what I love about these diesels, everything is different on every kind of application whether its the engine, transmission, radiator, differential, etc. Just coming away from owning 3 different gassers and being new to the diesel field all this is almost overwhelming. Without members like you I don't know what us newbies would ever do. Thanks for being here for us.

Why would you want to change the fluid. You can't get it all out as there is some in the axle tube and in each wheel hub. I would look at the oil and the plug on the bottom. Look for metal or signs of water. If all is ok Leave it alone. Just my opinion. A Diesel Mechanic for 35 years.

Ups 34,
You're probably right about that but my Freightliner maintenance manual states to change it initially at 6,000 and then every 24,000 miles. It may be overkill but FL wants you to do it for a reason. I do it for warranty and peace of mind. Murphy's law..I'd be the one to blow my rear end and be asked..when did you change the fluid..
I do all of my own maintenance. It's an easy job and 3 gallons of gear oil in my case is cheap insurance.
