Refrigerator is wired to Inverter

Here's a quote from my owner's manual (2014 Model 27n):

"NOTE: Switch the refrigerator to GAS mode
anytime you are running it with the
shoreline unplugged to avoid
discharging house batteries.
The refrigerator draws its electrical
current through the inverter and not
directly from the shoreline."

Why in heck would they wire it that way? Especially when they turn right around and tell you not to use it that way.

Does the refrigerator have an ice maker? They require 120 v to operate. My reefer switches automatically when it senses 120 v available, does yours do the same? You'll have to remember to turn off the inverter or keep reefer on 'manual' setting. Not the brightest situation unless I'm missing something.

They tell you this for a couple of reasons...

1. You could run your house batteries down.

2. The invertor may not be large enough to run the frig.

I removed our 4 door Norcold and installed a residential Samsun RF197 about a year ago. Our invertor is large enough to run the frig without a problem, so it runs on the invertor anytime shore power is disconnected, and the battery bank with the solar cells will keep it running for several days without a problem.

Both Dometic and Norcold RV fridges will automatically switch between electric and LP gas with electric being the primary. If the Motorhome is factory wired with an inverter, it most likely has an automatic transfer switch between Shore Power, Generator, and Inverter.

Therefore, when unplugged from Shore Power and no Generator, the Inverter will supply the fridge which will automatically switch to electric. Thus your house batteries are being discharged.

The manual is just indicating a warning and method to get around this operation.

I think it draws around 7-10 AH....and that can take a great battery down quickly. I on the other hand....went the opposite....I has installed a solar project and decided not to waste my gas on the refrig but rather let the panels and the batteries handle the frig. So far so good...even in the winter it is doing its thing on 110v

danhannah, the manual is written for all Vista units. According to the wiring diagram for the 27N the refrigerator is not connected to the inverter. Actually that statement does not make sense. The only refrigerators that are connected to an inverter are the residential models which will not run on gas.
The 36Y does have a residential refrigerator.

Makes Sense!

Thank You! That owner's manual comment made no sense until you explained that it probably wasn't directed at my unit - (and truly not at the majority of units in the Sunstar line, which are mostly gas/electric, and not residential.)

I think an owners manual re-write is in order, but what do I know - I'm new here....
