Recieved my new core from SCS last week....$101.
My buddy and I started the replacement on Saturday and followed BattChief's detailed instructions on removing (tilting) the front cap.
It took 2.5 hours to remove the trim, wipers, mirror etc. and get the cap to tilt out to expose the SCS "clam shell" Opening the plastic case and removing the old core including taking off the near nipple prior to removal took about .5 hour.
The new core would not install (wasted 1 hour) without removing the front nipple. Once installed, buttoning up the case took about 2 hours as it was very hard to work on and position with the limnitation of the tilted cap. Next time I would remove the cap entirely so I could have direct frontal access. (add 1 hour)
Installing the cap back to pre removal took about 1 hour to position everything so all the screw holes lined up. Reattaching the wiper controls and exterior trim pieces took another hour.
Total time to date with 2 men was apprx
8 to 9 hours. We spread it over 2 days as there is a lot of bending and twisting...
Will drive test it tomorrow for any leakage..Static test showed no leaks..A little concerned over SCS pretesting....The nipple I removed (with lots of torque) was not taped with teflon tape and the other nipple had tape hanging out of the fitting. We decided not to retape the taped fitting but can retape after installation if necessary.
Tip...when you remove the 16 clips that hold the case together paint them red so you can find them after they fly off while reinstalling...3 of my clips are still in orbit somewhere overhead.
We could probably save 2 hours doing it the next time (god forbid) as now we know where all the screws and bolts are. Hope this info helps somewhat...Thanks again to Battchief for the detailed instructions posted on the forum.....RKL
