Residual voltage?

Hello,
We have an '06 JourneySG and the GFI above the bath sink has died. I have voltage going to it, but not in the recepricals when probed. Yes, I have rest it, but it wasn't trip in the first place. My first question is will a conventional home GFI fit/work in the coach? The second question is why do I have residual voltage at the GFI's exterior terminals where the wires attach when I have the circuit breaker that feeds it in the "OFF" position? When I energize that breaker, I read 115v (on shore power) at the side terminals and when I cut that breaker, I still read about 10 volts.
Something isn't right.

Thanks, Dan & Linda

I don't know the answer, but perhaps it's working fine and that is why it's shut off--because of the stray voltage?

Sometimes when several wires are ran next to each other they will act like a transformer; the electromagnetic lines of flux from the live wires cutting across the "dead" wires induce a small voltage. To be safe just turn it all off. There shouldn't be much power there unless your running a decent sized load.

Yes, any household rated GFCI will work. On installation and disassembly take note of the line and load wires and install the same way. After the GFCI is out of the circuit turn on the breaker and measure line voltage. It should read what other circuits read in the coach.(around 117 volts) The load outlets should read 0. If yes turn breaker off and check line voltage again. It should read 0. if not you have a short or a back feed.

GFIs do get cranky and have to be replaced especially if they are often tripped. Most fail by never again resetting but I have seen them fail in other ways too. Make certain your load outlets are dry and if in doubt replace them especially if they are cheap chinese made crap RV outlets that are not UL appoved without screw terminals.
