Jim,
Just came back from Alaska. The road is in much better condition with regard to the size of rocks. I did encounter about 3 small rocks that put small chips in the windshield of my class A. I also saw a few (maybe 2%) of the autos with rock guards. The most typical was a small mesh screen over the radiator. If you slow down for oncoming vehicles (especially trucks) and dont tailgate, then you should not have much problem with rocks.
hope this helps,

Our experience of a 6 month trip to Alaska was also to keep to the right side of the road putting distance between us and an oncoming vehicle. As suggested above, we also put distance between us and the vehicle ahead and slowed down for oncoming vehicles. The only windshield chip we got on our class A was in Alberta, in a town of 40,000, on a four lane road from an oncoming oil truck.

You don't need a rock protector any more. Nearly the entire highway is paved now.
