Hi All,

Here are the spec sheets for the two fan motors used in the RVP basement air conditioners. According to the technician I spoke with, they all use the same motors. From the earliest unit, 6535A through and including the current high efficiency model (yes, they are still making it) 6636. Same physical size too. When he checked the computer, it showed 135 of the evaporator motor in stock.

The only problem is that these are custom motors and are made with longer shafts and are flat spotted in custom places. Over the years, the suppliers have changed. Mine has Fasco motors and the current suppliers are ‘Broad-Ocean’ and ‘G.E. – Regal Beloit’. Fasco has really good information but the current suppliers do not.

My local supplier says he can come up with an alternative easy enough by using a standard motor with a coupler and an additional shaft to get the length.

As I heard once, think of an Air Conditioner like a refrigerator, when was the last time you had to replace the compressor in a refrigerator? The most likely reason for any AC to stop cooling is either clogged condenser or evaporator, or defective fan motors. With the fans, it’s usually the Babbitt bearings that get worn down due to the dust and lack of periodic oiling. This causes the armature to contact the stator and locks the shaft.

With the basement AC units, yearly maintenance is expensive because the unit has to be unbolted and removed from the coach to get the top cover off for service. But the only way you will know for sure what the problem is, is to pull it out to check for lint buildup on the evaporator, dirt in the condenser, or fans that aren’t turning (you can’t rely on Amp. readings for this).

These basement air conditioners really do work well, and if properly maintained, will keep even a 40-foot, four slide AD cool on the hottest of days.

Knowing what’s available can save you the price of replacing the whole unit or adding additional AC’s. Remember, the same HP motor that is blowing the outside air is%

Hi Mark.....

Nice post with good info, however the links seem to be gone. I saw them on my IPhone and went to retrieve them here but they disappeared some how. No moderator editing I hope.

Strange!

The original post was complete. Now I nave to remember what was in it!

Knowing what’s available can save you the price of replacing the whole unit or adding additional AC’s. Remember, the same HP motor that is blowing the outside air is used for the inside air and we know what a hurricane it can blow under the rear of the coach.

My testing indicates that the AC can move over 200 cubic feet of air per minute inside the coach. That equates to a coach air exchange about every 11 minutes.
Here are typical results for full sun, AC running about 33% of the time, on one compressor.
On one compressor the readings are Condenser Air 90°F, Air return 72°F, Evaporator Air 62°F measured at first register.
On two compressors the readings are Condenser Air 90°F, Air return 72°F, Evaporator Air 56°F measured at first register.

The links below have good information and testing procedures for motors and windings.
