Satellite Antenna Questions
I am considering DirecTV for my rig. I don't want to use a permanent roof mount. I will most likely fabricate a ladder mount. It must support DirecTV HD. Any suggestions?

Why are you only considering Direct tv?
I've had a Dish tailgater for 7+ years and Dish network for decades in my SB. Most times the tailgater gets placed about our CG site to get that clear view of the sats in the S SW sky. My ususl 50' coax does the job but i carry a 100' that has been used a couple of times. A fixed ladder mount will severely limit the ability to see the sats.
As i have Dish network at home the tailgater only adds $7 a month to our bill and i get the same channels. Dish also has $35 a month where you can stop and re start when needed. Dish has very good customer service where i have read on here not so much with direct tv.

Only considering HD DirecTV because that is what I use at home.

You do know that there are no "dome" type antennas that can receive DirecTV HD. A Trav'ler will but it's not suited for a ladder mount.
With what you want to do, I'd look at Dish. Winegard makes a G3 Carry Out and they also sell a ladder mount.

It seems easy enough to point them. how do they do with wind and/or rain? Can you bring your dvr and all its contents too?

Open faced dishes perform much better than domes where the rain water sits on the shell.
I use two 5 gallon buckets with about 3 gallons of water each for ballast. I have gone through some pretty serious winds, near 50 mph +, without issues.
The cost of a dish, tripod and good tools is less than a dome and has full capabilities than no dome can offer.
You can move your equipment between your home and the RV at your choice. The only thing DirecTV or Dish doesn't allow is reception at both at the same time.

I have a dome Wineguard Roadtrip factory mounted antenna on our coach. It is a small dish and weather easily blocks the DirecTV signal. The Roadtrip works well in the southern US states but in Washington state reception is iffy. I plan to replace it with an larger open satellite dish in the future.
I also carry an older Wineguard Carryout satellite antenna. It is also a covered dish antenna but the dish is bigger. I keep it in a bin and I use it when there is rain or snow blocking the signal to my Roadtrip antenna. My portable works OK in northern states but severe weather can block a signal for awhile. Having a portable antenna that is not mounted is also very helpful when a hard mounted antenna is blocked by trees or other obstructions. I can connect to my Carryout and I can usually find a place where the antenna can get a clear view of the satellite signal.
My older Carryout antenna appears to be similar to the Wineguard G3 Carryout. The G2 antenna appears to be similar to my Roadtrip antenna. But you need to do your research to find the antenna that will work for you.
A side note on DirecTV. DirecTV requires two feeds. One feed is to watch TV and the second feed is for recording TV shows. If I only use one feed then there is a message on my screen that says my system is looking for the secondary line in. So in the two coaches that I have used my portable satellite antenna I have ran a second antenna wire from where my satellite antenna connects in my bin to my satellite receiver box.
And my portable antenna needs 12V power so I have also installed a cigarette lighter style 12V outlet in my bin next to the TV inputs.
I have also installed switches to switch between the two antenna systems.
There is also the option of a manual dish on a tripod. I used one for many years. The only problem I had was finding the satellite signal. At times I found the signal quickly and at times it took me a good while to find a signal. The manual dish also requires two feeds to the satellite box. Being a larger dish the signal is stronger so weather is less of a factor. DirecTV had a promotional price on the manual antennas so that people could set one up when, or if, they had storm damage that made their house mounted antenna inoperable. I think I got mine for $50.00.
I should note that the antennas discussed above do not receive a HD signal.
Safe travels. JD

Just an FYI. I have read that Direct TV now requires 1 to 3 days to change your location to allow for receiving local stations. Dish only takes about 10 minutes. You may want to scan for recent customer satisfaction on Direct.

I've never had to wait for DirecTV to change my location. I call and they change my location while I'm talking to them. My last change of service address was around the 1st of April 2018.
Safe travels. JD

JD, If you don't call and change locations do you get local stations from home instead?

No. It is a spot beam about 200 miles in diameter and it stays focused on your home or the last place you requested.
I never move mine because our receiver at home is still recording some local programs through out the week.
I have Dish.

I live in Washington state. I can get local stations till I reach central Oregon. That is where the spot beam stops. Federal law prevents broadcasting local stations nationwide to protect cable service. So when RVing in Washington I have local stations.
When we travel south I use an address for an RV park in Anaheim, CA. I get local stations for LA and that is OK with me.
The LA and New York signals are broadcast nationwide. So I can get the LA feed anywhere I go. When we travel to Eastern US I use an address near New York. The three hour time difference can be problematic when prime time LA broadcasts start at 11:00 PM eastern time.
For local stations I use the cable in RV parks or over the air broadcasts.
Safe travels. JD
